Review: To Taste Temptation by Elizabeth Hoyt

I love it when a terrific writer gets more fabulous. Elizabeth Hoyt proves she belongs in that group with her fourth historical, To Taste Temptation. Widowed Lady Emeline Gordon, so proper and so refined, still mourns her brother, who was killed in America when his regiment was attacked. Samuel Hartley, a wealthy Boston businessman, rents the London house next to her. Because of his connection to her brother’s regiment, she agrees to take on his sister as her protogee. She doesn’t know he’s in London to find the traitor who betrayed the regiment. All she knows is the passion she feels for this bold and uncivilized American she can’t resist, even though she’s engaged to Lord Vale, who was also part of the regiment.

This is the first book of The Legend of the Four Soldier series, and it has passion, witty dialogue, great characters and great plotting. The end is riveting. The secondary characters are as well-rounded and interesting as Emmeline and Samuel. Emeline’s son is appealing, her sharp-tongued aunt is refreshing. Two of the characters, Lord Vale and Emeline’s friend Melisande, are in her next book, To Seduce a Sinner, which will be out in November. :)

What struck me most about this book is that Hoyt’s writing has more depth than in her previous books. Emmeline grieves deeply for all the men who left her too soon: brother, husband, father. Both Samuel and Lord Vale sufffer from post traumatic stress. It left me sorry this book was over and eager to read the next one.
