Kim Killion & Kensington Zebra Debut Authors Hijack Magical Musings!

Thank you, Edie, for having ALL of us at once. Let me start by asking your
readers a single question…

Do you have a favorite author?

Of course you do. Teresa Medeiros is mine. I adore her, but I can tell you this much, I didn’t fall in love with every single one of her books. (Just most of them) The beauty of picking up a new author is the simple fact that the book you are about to read was probably edited more than a dozen times. Every word in that book was carefully thought out, where a lot of the NYT authors are under the pressure of a deadline to crank out their next novel.

So I’m here today to introduce you to more than a dozen new authors. Hope you enjoy…

I’ll start…

Astride a stolen horse, encircled by the shackled arms of Broderick Maxwell, a Scottish spy escaping certain death in the Tower of London, Lizbeth Ives rides to the north, hidden by the merciful darkness. By stealth and by cunning, the daughter of the Lord High Executioner has undone her father’s cruel work, compelled to save the innocent man with her. There is no turning back—they are bound as one in his iron chains. Consumed by mortal fear, driven by passion, they disappear into the night…

A single raven follows them. Is it an omen? Or only the first of those who would capture them? They must ride on. If captured, they will face death together. But if they reach Scotland, he will claim her for his own…forever.

I’ve been writing since 1997. My debut book was released by Kensington in July of 2008, and I have enjoyed a year long adventure of promoting that book which has recently been recognized in a slew of contests. Not only am I nominated for a RITA®, I also finaled in the National Readers’ Choice Awards, the Booksellers’ Best Awards, the HOLT Medallion, the Golden Quill awards and the More than Magic contest. It’s a thrilling ride and it never stops…

London, England – 1830

An independent young woman finds herself schooling men in the art of seduction–and stealing the heart of one very sexy rake.

London, England – 1830

An earl desperately looking to avoid scandal, nonetheless enrolls in a school bound for scandal in the hopes of claiming the only woman he has ever truly wanted to pleasure.

Delilah Marvelle has been writing since high school, but didn’t start on the publishing path until 1998, when she joined RWA. Her first book, Mistress of Pleasure, the first in a five book series about a school that educates men in the art of love and seduction was published by Kensington in September 2008.

Delilah Marvelle is a two time Golden Heart finalist, an RT Nominee for Best First Historical, the winner of N.O.R’s Best Historical of 2008, and a double finalist in the Bookseller’s Best Award.

Lady Isabel Adair is the last woman Sir Duncan MacGruder wants to see again, much less be obliged to save. Three years ago, Isabel broke their engagement to become the Earl of Frasyer’s mistress, shattering Duncan’s heart and hopes in one painful blow. But Duncan’s promise to Isabel’s dying brother compels him to rescue her from those determined to bring down Scottish rebel Sir William Wallace. Betraying the man she loved was the only way for Isabel to save her father, but every moment she spends with Duncan reminds her just how much she sacrificed. No one could blame him for despising her, yet Duncan’s misgivings cannot withstand a desire that has grown wilder with time. Now, on a perilous journey through Scotland, two wary lovers must confront both the enemies who will stop at nothing to hunt them down, and the secret legacy that threatens their passion and their lives…

With a wastrel brother and a treacherous former fiance, Lady Nichola Westcott hardly expects the dangerously seductive Scot who kidnaps her to be a man of his word. Though Sir Alexander MacGruder promises not to hurt her, Nichola’s only value is as a pawn to be ransomed. Alexander’s goal is to avenge his father’s murder, not to become entangled with the enemy. But his desire to keep Nichola with him, in his home – in his bed – unwittingly make her a target for those who
have no qualms about shedding English blood. Now Nichola is trapped – by her powerful attraction to a man whose touch shakes her to the core. Unwilling and unable to resist each other, can Nichola and Alexander save a love that has enslaved them both?

Hi, I’m Diana Cosby. After I retired from the Navy in 1998, I began writing. My first book, His Captive, was published by Kensington books in November of 2008, with my second novel in the MacGruder Brothers series, His Captive, released in December 2009. To day my Scottish medievals have finaled in the Booksellers Best Awards, Laurel Wreath and the Laurel Wreath Contest. Writing is an amazing journey I am blessed to travel.

Constantinople 1763: Jonathon never wanted a mistress, until he met Jaline. Secrets and danger follow them to England. Reaching for love may be as dangerous as reaching for the truth as an ancient mystery is revealed.

I’m Sarah Parr. I’ve been writing for several years. My first book, RENEGADE, a historical adventure romance, was released by Kensington in June 2009. The next will debut in July 2010.

The Notorious Bridegroom

1803 and Napoleon plans to invade England with the help of French spies and traiterous Englishmen.

Bryce Andover, Earl of Londringham will do everything he can to stop them, if only the pesky Miss Patience Mandeley would stop spying on him at every turn to try and prove he is a traitor and not her brother. If they can trust each other long enough, Bryce and Patience may just stop the French invasion and fall in love.

I wrote my first historical manuscript from 1990-1993. Wrote “The End” and thought that was the end to my writing career. I had written a novel! In 2006, my sister-in-law asked to read my manuscript and with her prodding, I pulled out all the old disks, downloaded the story, and revised it a thousand ttimes (this could be a slightly exaggerated number).. When I thought it was pretty darn good, I gave her a copy. She read it and really liked it! Based on her review, I sent it to Kensington, and they bought it. My first manuscript is now my first book, “The Notorious Bridegroom,” which debuts August 4, 2009. “The Vengeful Bridegroom” should be available fall of 2010.

England, 1152. After seventeen years of civil war, things are about to change.

A reluctant hero on a mission of war rescues a heroine on the run. They share a single night of unforgettable—and forbidden—passion, but their explosive reunion a year follows betrayal and a bloody invasion. Now the power of revenge, the lure of buried treasure, and a cunning enemy threaten a love that can unite a realm, or bring it crashing the the ground.

Hi, my name is Kris Kennedy, and after about 6 years of writing, my first book was released May 2009, THE CONQUEROR, a hot, sweeping medieval. This was one of two manuscripts that finaled in the 2008 Golden Heart® contest, and I am incredibly excited to have THE CONQUEROR on the shelves. I love writing about honorable, tortured alpha heroes and the competent, funny women who make their world come alive. I like to plant them in big plots with high stakes and make things really bad. And really hot. Sexy Medieval Adventure Romance. J

In Sherwood Forest, outcast warrior Will Scarlet rescues a blind woman who dreams of fire. Now, to defeat the new Sheriff of Nottingham, he’ll need to become a hero for the ages. It’s amazing what a scoundrel will do for love…

Born in California, raised in the Midwest, Carrie Lofty found the love of her life in England. She earned her master’s in history with a thesis on Old West outlaws. Her fiction has been praised as “inventive” (Dear Author), “shattering” (Nights & Weekends), and “intelligent” (Smart Bitches). Romantic Times gave her Zebra Debut, WHAT A SCOUNDREL WANTS (Dec/08), four stars: “The leading man will win readers’ hearts as only a bad boy can. Lofty writes adventure romance like a bard of old.” The sequel, SCOUNDREL’S KISS (Jan/10), pits a Spanish warrior monk against the troubled woman he’s sworn to protect.

A romantic Victorian-set adventure that travels from the ballrooms and parlors of London through the Mediterranean to the exotic valleys of Tunisia. Fans of Julia Quinn and Connie Brockway will enjoy this witty foray into the outer edges of civilization—and propriety.

Anthea Lawson—aka Anthea and Lawson—are a husband and wife creative team living in the Pacific Northwest. Musicians, as well as writers, the two love collaborating on creative projects. Their first novel, PASSIONATE, was released by Kensington books in October 08. This sensual, Victorian-set romance has been nominated for the prestigious RWA RITA® award for Best First Book of 2008. Their second novel, ALL HE DESIRES, will be out this November.

England 1815— Morgan Bligh has honed her body and her magic into weapons, but she’s always lived by her heart. Yet to defeat a traitor whose unspeakable dark power threatens both her worlds, she must forget her feelings— because her partner in the hunt is wicked war hero Cameron Sinclair. He’s broken her heart once, and from the looks of him, he could do it again…

Alix Rickloff’s first paranormal-regency, LOST IN YOU, was an August 2008 Kensington release. Romantic Times called the blend of regency history and fantasy adventure, “a compelling, original love story”, Booklist praised it for being “filled with sensory details and a deep sense of lore”, and Manic Readers gave the “fast-paced sensually-charged adventure” 5 stars. July 2009 brings the release of her second book, DANGEROUS AS SIN, which continues the story of the Other—humans bearing the blood of both Fey and Mortal. Men and women living on a knife-edge between the everyday world they inhabit and the shadowy realm of the Fey who make their cunning and sometimes treacherous presence known all too often.

Running from a brutal past to the father she’s never met, Rachel Douglas must rely on the survival skills of the hard-edged gunman her father sends to guide her across the rugged terrain of the Dakota Territory. But Sager’s got another plan and a blood debt to settle.

Time doesn’t always heal all wounds. Sometimes it takes a little vengeance.

Elaine Levine began writing while in college when her son was only a year old. Her dream was to be a stay-at-home mom with a lucrative career as an author. Twenty-four years, a daughter, a college degree, and two grandchildren later, she sold her first novel in a two book deal to Kensington Publishing Corp. Elaine’s books are part of her Men of Defiance series, focusing on the lives of the hard-edged men who settle in the fictional 19th Century town of Defiance, Dakota Territory–and the women who tame them. The first in her series, RACHEL AND THE HIRED GUN, was released in January 2009. The second, AUDREY AND THE MAVERICK, will be released in February 2010.

England 1814: Elizabeth Medford would do anything to avoid marriage to ambitious and cruel Harold Wetherby–including asking London’s most well-known rake, the Duke of Beaufort, to ruin her. But though the duke may find her tempting, he has secrets of his own that make Elizabeth a woman he must avoid at all costs…

Hi, my name is Allegra Gray. I’ve loved reading and writing stories since I was a kid, and decided a few years ago that if I ever wanted to see my own book sitting on the shelf of a bookstore, I’d better get started. Luckily, a graduate degree in English, a background in teaching literature, some wonderful writers’ groups, and a whole lot of determination helped me find my lovely agent and sell NOTHING BUT SCANDAL to Kensington Zebra, to be released July 2009. I’m learning a lot about promotion and polishing up the next book in line to be launched!

The second book in The Spinster Club series, Every Time We Kiss, hit the shelves on March 3, 2009. The Spinster Club revolves around the lives of five Regency women who have all made up their minds not to marry. But one of the women is playing matchmaker without the others noticing.

After seventeen years working for financial institutions in software development, Christie Kelley took a leap of faith and started her first book. Seven years later, her first book EVERY NIGHT I’M YOURS was bought by Zebra books.

Mastering The Marquess: London, 1815. Meredith Burnley will do anything to save her half-sister Annabel from a terrible fate. She turns to the one man who can help them: the powerful and arrogant Marquess of Silverton. Silverton finds Meredith the most intriguing woman he has ever met. But he soon realizes he must risk everything—including his life—to claim her as his own.

My name is Vanessa Kelly, and I’ve been writing since I was a teenager. Mostly non-fiction, however, and I spent several years in graduate school studying British writers of the Regency period. In 2006 I decided to channel all that study into something else—writing historical romances. My first Regency-set historical was released by Kensington books in April 2009.

Lady Olivia Fairchild has always lived a life of luxury and ease, but she longs for the kind of intrigue that can’t be found on a ballroom dance floor. Then Olivia learns she’s been accepted as the first female student in England’s prestigious spy school. But spy-training is far more grueling than Olivia ever imagined – and her dashing spy master seems bent on banishing her from the school in record time…

Sebastian Brooks believes women have no place within the dangerous world of espionage – and he’s determined to oust Olivia by whatever means necessary. But even as Sebastian mercilessly taunts her, he finds the sight of Olivia’s shapely body gallivanting on horseback is driving him wild. Olivia, too, can feel her longing for Sebastian heating up. Surrendering to her desire could be the most reckless move of her life – but resisting it may be impossible…

TOO HOT FOR A SPY (March 2009) is Pearl Wolf’s current Historical Romance from Kensington Publishers and is the first in a series about the Fairchilds; The Duke of Heatham, his wife, his five daughters and his only son and heir, a boisterous family whose exploits turn the duke’s hair gray. The second in this series TOO HOT FOR A RAKE is due in 2010.

  1. I’ve read many of these books, and they’re all great! The wonderful thing, imo, about Kensington, is they have beautifully written books for a great price!

    Way to go ladies!

  2. Edie Ramer says:

Kimberly, and all the Zebra authors, thanks for this wonderful post! A big wave to Carrie Lofty, who’s in the WisRWA chapter. So many of you have blogged with Magical Musings already. It’s great to see you here again.

  3. Thanks again to all the ladies of MM for showcasing our books today. In the midst of conference preparation, I appreciate any opportunity to squeeze in some promo time and talk to your viewers. And speaking of conference…a little bird told me Delilah Marvelle will be signing her second book, Lord of Pleasure, in DC!!! That’s 2 weeks before its release date. This is one hero I can’t wait to get my hands on…book…I mean book! 😉

  4. Oooooo. Can you guys let some other folks hijack the blog, too. I sort of like this “release low-down”. 😀

As for new authors to me, I’ve read Kalayna Price’s “Once Bitten”, which is one heck of an urban fantasy. It’s no wonder that Belle Bridge has snagged her up.

  5. Edie Ramer says:

Kimberly, I won’t be at National in DC this year, but I’ll be rooting for you at the RITAs from Wisconsin! I’ve read HER ONE DESIRE, and I can see why it’s garnered so many awards.

I wish I could be in DC for Delilah’s signing, but I’ll look for it at the stores. 🙂

  6. Edie Ramer says:

Lori, thanks for stopping by. I can’t wait for your release!

  7. Edie Ramer says:

Marcia, any time you want to hijack Magical, let me know. It’s all yours. 🙂

  8. Sarah Parr says:

Edie, Thanks for showcasing our books on Magical Musings!! A big wave to everyone :).

  9. Diana Cosby says:

Thanks to everyone at Magical Musings for allowing us to hijack y’all. *G* It’s my pleasure to be here and an honor to be surrounded by these amazing writers! I’d love to be at National, but sadly, not happening. His Woman is a finalist in the Bookseller’s Best Contest. Please keep your fingers crossed! Thanks again Kim for organizing this coup! *G*

    Hi everyone!

What a great showcase for all these debut books! Thanks to the hosts at Magical Musings for helping spread the word about our books.

And to my fellow debut authors, hope to meet some of you at RWA nationals next week!

  11. So many great books to read! Thanks for showcasing us on your blog, Edie!

There are still a few books I haven’t managed to get yet. Hmm, a trip to Borders will soon be in order.

  12. Carrie Lofty says:

Hi Edie and everyone else here at MM. So great to see all of us Kensy gals out in force! For those of you who’ll be at Nationals, I’m attending the Lit Signing and giving two workshops, both on Saturday: “High-Octane Kisses: Writing Action with Heart” (with Ann Aguirre, Laura Bradford and Cynthia Eden) and “The Billionaire Tycoon’s Secret Promotional Baby” (with SB Sarah, Jane from Dear Author, and RITA-award winner Caridad Ferrer, and Ann Aguirre). Hope to see you there!

And thanks again to MM for featuring us today!

  13. Kris Kennedy says:

Hey there Magical Musings ladies! Thanks so much for having us all pile into your wonderful blog today. 🙂

Unfortunately, I won’t be in D.C., but I’m so happy so many other Z authors will be there, signing and giving workshops and being up for Rita(R) award . . .

Hope people find some interesting new-to-them authors today, either from the original post or comments after.

A new author to me . . . let’s see, I picked up Jeri Smith-ready a few months ago and was totally wow-ed!

  14. I forgot to mention that I will be in DC for the RWA conference and signing both my debut book, Every Night I’m Yours and the second book in the series, Every Time We Kiss.

I can’t wait to see everyone!

  15. Sorry I’m late to the party.

This was a fabulous idea, and I’m so happy Kimberly invited me to participate! I’ll be signing at Nationals as well and look forward to meeting my fellow Z-debs in person.

  16. spyscribbler says:

It’s a toss-up between John Irving and Neil Gaiman. But it looks like I need to try a few new ones out, especially that last book! 🙂

  17. WOW! I just woke up, LOL. I’ve been up late every night trying to get ready for RWA Nationals. New to me author that I loved? Obviously, a lot of the Kensington authors are on that list. I am totally blown away by their talent! But I would have to say apart from Kensington — Meredith Duran. Man can that woman write.

  18. LaDonna says:

Wow, y’all sure know how to throw a party! 😆 So glad all of you joined us at Magical today. Very exciting news all around, and I wish you all a fabulous career!

A debut author I picked up this year was Kathryn Stockett, who wrote The Help. Love the book, loved her voice, loved everything about it. I’m always cheering debut authors!

  19. Hi all! Thanks for the debut authors party, MM, it’s fun to see so many of us here~

Delilah, great news on signing your release early, especially since Mistress of Pleasure is sold out! Nothing like being at a book signing with no books…

I must second Meredith Duran. Just finished reading Bound by Your Touch. A great writer and storyteller.

  20. Edie Ramer says:

Sarah, it was great to have you on Magical again. And in such fabulous company. 😎

  21. Edie Ramer says:

Diana, my fingers are crossed for you for the Bookseller’s Best Contest. It’s an honor to be a finalist. You go!

  22. Edie Ramer says:

Allegra, so glad you and the others were part of this. It’s a lot of fun to have all of you here.

  23. Edie Ramer says:

Christie, I need to take a book to the bookstore soon, too! All the books sound awesome. This is a great way to leap into publishing.

  24. Edie Ramer says:

Carrie, I wish I could be at your workshops! I’ll have to wait to listen to the CDs, but it’s not the same thing. Maybe you can give one of them at a WisRWA conference some time.

  25. Edie Ramer says:

Kris, I think one of my CPs is a Jeri Smith-Ready fan. Obviously I should give her a try, too.

  26. Edie Ramer says:

Alix and Christie, have fun at Nationals. I wish I could be there to meet all of you in person, but maybe next year.

  27. Edie Ramer says:

Spy, I can see why you like the last book. It has spies! It’s funny the preferences we have. I’m putting a dog in my next book, just because I love book covers with dogs on them.

  28. Edie Ramer says:

Delilah, I agree about the Kensington writers. Meredith Duran is a new name to me. I’ll check her out.

  29. Edie Ramer says:

LaD, I’ll check out Kathryn Stockett, too. Great to hear the names of so many new good writers.

  30. Edie Ramer says:

Anthea, now I’ll definitely check out Meredith Duran tonight. Thanks for the heads up. And thank you and the other Zebra authors for coming to the party.

  31. As usual, I’m the last one to the party! Edie, thanks for having all the Zebra gals here at MM. I’ll also be at RWA, and looking foward to meeting the Z-gals who can make it. And cheering on all the amazing talent in this group who are up for awards.

Speaking of Meredith Duran, I just bought her new book yesterday. I’m really looking foward to reading it.

  32. Carrie Lofty says:

Edie, you can count me in for WisRWA next summer. Won’t that be fun!!

  33. Sarah Parr says:

Count me in for RWA Nationals in DC. I fly in on July 15th in time for the book signing Wednesday night. :).

  34. Cynthia Eden says:

So many great books!!! I’ve read several, and my TBR pile just grew.

  35. Edie Ramer says:

Vanessa, it was great having you here today! Another Meredith Duran fan. She must be hot!

  36. Edie Ramer says:

Carrie, it will be fab to see you at WisRWA next year. I’m on the conference planning committee — one of Betsy’s minions. We’ve been sending emails back and forth.

  37. Edie Ramer says:

Cindy, my TBR pile is already toppling. That’s okay. It will topple more. 🙂

  38. Hey…ya’lll…I can’t believe this day has totally gotten away from me. I’m so embarrased that I haven’t been in and out, but do you have any idea how hard it is to blog without a computer??? Mine died and my poor little phone has had a workout today… Whew!

We do make a fine display of books don’t we. 🙂

Thanks Edie! You’re the poo for letting us hijack you for the day.

See you all in DC! Woot!!!

  39. Diana Cosby says:

Thank you SO much for allowing us to spend the day with you at Magical Musings! Kim, another thanks for setting up this time.

  42. liz Kreger says:

Wow, can’t think how I managed to miss this blog, Edie. Sorry bout that. Only excuse is that I was gone all day and was then feelin’ like crap.

What a terrific line up of authors. Took me forever to read everything, but it was so worth it. 😆
