Do you believe?
October 14th, 2009 by Edie Ramer
Sorry about the long video, but I couldn’t resist. I’m guessing Twilight fans won’t like it as much as Buffy fans. I enjoyed it, so you can tell which camp I’m in.
Paranormal beings have become wildly popular in fiction and movies lately. With Halloween coming soon, I’ve been wondering about our fascination with the paranormal, and what’s real and what isn’t real. I don’t believe in vampires or shape-shifters, werewolves, demons or zombies. I think the only demons or devils are the ones inside us. I don’t believe in real witches. I don’t believe in fairies or brownies — except for the brownies I eat. I’ve had many close encounters of the first kind with those kind of brownies.
Which reminds me of extraterrestrials. I believe in them. It’s impossible for me to think we’re the only living beings in the universe with the intelligence to travel through space. Would I like to see an extraterrestrial? Yes … and no. What if all the stories about medical tests are true? Eww. But maybe there are kinder, gentler extraterrestrials. Like Yoda. I’d love to sit down with Yoda and have a chat.
Ghosts. I believe in life after death, and I believe it’s possible that some of them might try to contact us. And it’s possible some confused dead people might stick around and try to talk to the living.
This is a fascination that I’ve had for many years. Sometimes I feel like my mother and sister are watching over me, sending me love. Though I don’t hear or see them, I feel their love. I can’t explain it, but it’s pure love. Wanting nothing in return. Telling me that everything is going to be all right. That feeling is proof enough for me.
Angels are possible, but it’s also possible there are no angels. The same with spirit guides. My problem is that if they’re around us, why don’t they talk to me? Hey, Angels and Spirit Guides, I’m here! Yes, I’m speaking to you. I want to hear you. I want guidance. Don’t talk to my subconscious. Talk to the conscious me. Please.
Extrasensory perception. There have been plenty of tests that prove such a thing. I’d love to have ESP, but it seems to have passed me by.
So, all I’ve got is the feeling that my mother and sister are sending me love from the after-life.
What do you have? Any ET sightings? Ghost encounters? Angels? ESP? What do you think drives our fascination with the unknown?

Good morning Edie!
Great post. I love to talk about this stuff. Re: aliens and medical tests. Now granted, I don;’t have any personal experiences nor do I know anyone who does but I believe the allegations of medical testing are true. Think about it…If our government actually got their hands on an alien from outer space they would test the hell out of it and I don’t think they’d be kind about it either. Matter of fact, they’d probably kill poor E.T. first and then test him.
Ghosts? Absolutely. 100%. Ghosts and spirits are one in the same to me. I feel/sense my father quite often. Sometimes I see the shape of his face in the curtains or a shadow on the wall. I’m not scared at all. Actually, I’m very sad when the shape is no longer there.
Vampires, witches, demons? Only in my imagination.
Have a fantastic day!
Elle
Fun post!
I’d say I probably don’t believe in anything totally 100% There’s always that little doubt. The only thing I’ve exprieced are ghosts. A lot when I was little and lived in a certain home.
In my twenties, I swear I saw my dad the day he died, even though I had no idea he’d died or was even sick. I was at work and thought I saw him in the crowd. Hadn’t even been thinking about him at that time. So it was a weird experience. It was only later that night that I found out he’d died.
I do believe in ghosts, I do believe in ghosts…
But E.T.’s? Not so much. This summer I saw a show on ABC (think it was Dateline, but not sure). They interviewed several people who had “close encounters.” One of them had made several trips to E.T. land; the little green guys really liked him. In fact, even his wife testified that he wasn’t lying, having woken up one night to find him wandering around their home in a woman’s red plaid flannel nightgown. She asked him where he got the nightgown, and he replied, “I think the aliens put it on me before sending me back home.” I mean, seriously, don’t they have any fashion sense at all?
But, seriously again, my husband and his cousin SWEAR they saw a UFO when they were children. He also has had encounters with ghosts, which I can attest to – I was at his apartment (pre-marriage) when one such weirdness occurred. We had gone out and he left on the light in one corner of the living room. When we returned, it was shut off, and the other one turned on. Seriously. That’s better than finding him wandering around in a woman’s red plaid flannel nightgown, right?
P.S. You know I believe in angels. Lately they’ve let me down, but I have to think they are busy with people whose problems are bigger than mine.
Elle, I never thought of it, but that’s so true about our government. When I watched the movie ET, I was rooting with all my heart for him to get away from our government people. I knew what they’d do to him.
I’m glad you have the same feeling about your father as I’ve had with my mother and sister. Just thinking about it, I feel warm inside.
Lori, I’ve heard from other people who’ve seen ghosts. No wonder so many of us believe in life after life. How can we not? And how wonderful that your father came to see you.
I’m sure there probably are E.T.’s out there, but as for sightings, i’m not so sure. The thing that gets me is that these sightings always seem to be by major military bases. These supposed sightings are probably the military testing crafts.
Kath, I thought of you when I wrote about angels. I keep trying to talk to mine, but they’re not talking back.
Too funny about the plaid flannel nightgown. If it were silk or lace, then the wife would wonder.
Lori, there have been a lot of sightings in central Wisconsin, where there are no military bases. That’s where the ET in the movie Starman first landed.
Edie, can’t wait to watch this video, but I’m running out the door. You hooked me on Buffy! Apologies to Twilight fans, but Buffy still rules!
Donnell, you and me both!
Edie, this post is fabulous!
And yep, put me down for yes, yes, and yes! I believe in life after death, angels, guides, ET’s for the same reasons you do..hey it’s a huge world out there, and dare I say it…fairies too? Tinkerbell would be so proud of me today.
There are many beautiful mysteries around us, and hard for me to ignore such worlds/entities exist. Nothing is impossible in my world!
LaD, I knew you believed in all of that. I was thinking of mentioning Tinkerbell — just for you. Who hasn’t seen Peter Pan and hasn’t clapped for her?
Loved the video, Edie. I thought it was hilarious.
I always leave a little wiggle room when it comes to believing in anything paranormal. There are probably plenty out there that cannot be explained away … so I’m of the open mind.
Angels, demons and ghosts? You bet. The only ghost story I can come up with was shortly after my father died. Took it hard of course, but one night I was dreaming of something … don’t remember what, but suddenly my dad walked into the dream, stopped in the middle, looked right at me, gave a smile and a nod … like everything was okay and he was happy. What struck me was that he looked right at me. My dad was nearly blind when he died, so if he is in a better place, then he’s healthy and whole again. Made me feel a hellava lot better.
Edie, I think the angels are on strike. You’d think they’d be happy now that their team beat the Red Sox three games to ZERO. lol Or maybe they just partied too much in the post game celebration. Imagine all those little halos soaked in champagne…
Liz, that gave me chills…but made me happy to hear that your dad made you feel better.
Liz, I’m tearing up reading this. What a great appearance. I was going to say a great “dream”, but “appearance” fit.
Kath, that must be it. Blame baseball.
Edie, like you, I can’t believe there isn’t other life out there. Whether or not it is more advanced than we are and can fly the millions of light years from them to us, is another story. But I’m certainly keeping an open mind about that.
Michelle, I hope they’re more peaceful than we humans are. I think that’s what our governments are afraid of, that they’ll be like us.
