We had Tracey O’Hara as a guest blogger here at MagicalMusings a few weeks ago and when her book “Night’s Cold Kiss” came out, I had to have it. An new urban fantasy series? I’m in there. And Tracey didn’t disappoint as far as I’m concerned.

Antoinette Petrescu is a Venator, a human specially trained and equipped to hunt Necrodreniacs — a race of creatures that start out as Aeterus (which for centuries have been referred to as vampires) but are then hooked on the taste of fear and terror when drinking the blood of their victims.

Christian Laroque (a/k/a the Crimson Executioner) is an Aeterus, who for centuries have worked with the Guild to maintain peace between the Aeterus and humans. However, someone is working very hard to disrupt that delicate balance, first by killing the Director and then targeting his successor, Lucien.

Prejudiced from an early age with the murder of her mother, Toni, with the help of Christian and his friend Viktor, slowly begins to see the Aeterus as something other than blood-sucking parasites. Toni learns that even Aeterus’ could be the good guys. But then the nemesis of her youth reappears in her life. Dante, the Necrodreniac who murdered her mother and who supposedly perished in a fire, has resurfaced and is determined to add Toni to his list of victims. However, the emerging conspiracy goes way beyond Dante and the fringe group who appears determined to disrupt the delicate balance between the humans and the Aeterus.

Tracey did a wonderful job of building her world and creating a story that holds your interest throughout. I did feel that the ending was wrapped up a little too abruptly but did certainly didn’t take anything away from the actual story. I fully intend to add this series to my auto-buy list.
