Since this is Valentine’s Day weekend, I thought I’d blog about the little sweethearts in my family. I have two granddaughters, and one is entering a school talent contest. She’s been singing since she was old enough to form words. Music moves through that gal, and she’s a natural. The clincher is that she’s in first grade and a little nervous about her debut, but not enough to ditch her desire. My oldest granddaughter finished her first story recently, and reported there will be five in the series. She’s a year older than our music gal. All of these milestones were shared confidently and without reservations. I have three grandsons as well, all equally gifted, but this one’s for the gals.
The amazing thing about kids is their connection to who they are. They just know. Simple. The lessons we learn from our children remind us what we once knew, and might have forgotten. The fearlessness of spirit, the curiosity that pushes us to explore the world, the confidence in our choices, the determination to do what we love.
I have a theory that when young, everything truly is possible because you believe it to be so. That’s what I’ll always remember, cause it’s true of every human being. I’ve kept my belief in dreams.
All of life is definitely a work in progress, thank goodness, cause it means we can rework, rebuild, and switch tracks when our heart inspires us to. As writers, I believe we dig a little deeper as we make our way through life; truly experiencing it as we go. There’s a reason we should be hugging our children, and thanking our lucky stars they’re in our lives. Children will always be magical gifts in my world.
How do the angels in your life inspire you?

My little angel is one of the biggest things that keep me going. Sure she manages to get on my nerves ‘pon occasion, but that’s natural. I’m sure I get on her’s.
But I can see big things for her and will be at her side every step of the way.
Such a great post! I definitely feel like my son is the magical gift in my world. I love the way he believes in dreams and magic–and I hope he always believes!
My grandson is a daredevil. He reminds me of myself when I was young. Physically, I would do anything. Even now, I sometimes feel like I can. Which is why I was limping last weekend.
Liz, your angel is lucky to have you too! I love how you’ll, “be by her side every step of the way.” That’s what it’s all about imo; being there and sharing the experience.
Cindy, I bet he keeps the magic too! Your belief in him will secure the dreams and magic I bet. He sounds like such a sweetie too, every time I hear about him.
Too funny Edie! I had to smile, cause I know exactly what you mean. I ride Plasma cars with the kids, and riding on the back of Bella’s is a rush.
She’s fast and fearless.
Hope your limp is better!
LaDonna,
Loved your post today. Children are such precious gifts in our lives.
I have the honor of watching my 18 month old great niece every few weeks and love watching what she does and how she develops so much from one time to the next. She takes such delight in learning about things we take for granted. And she’s already developed what we refer to as an “Ellatude” which becomes very obvious when she can’t figure out something herself or she’s not getting something she wants. She will definitely not be a young woman with confidence.
Mary Jo, I love your term “Ellatude”. Too cute!
Eighteen months is the perfect age too; I really enjoyed those years of dimples and chubby cheeks. Talking about it gives me baby fever… hmmm, wonder if my girls are finished!
LaD, as always, a fantastic post. My kids inspire me with their open, fearless view of the world, their willingness to believe.
Michelle, I love the stories you’ve shared about your walks and playtime with the kids. We all had some great chats in Dallas. You’re a great mama!
