While I’m not a big fan of shopping during the holidays or busy store parking lots or icy roads, I could happily stay home, drink bottomless cups of cocoa, eat 3,000 calories worth of Christmas cookies and listen to the carols of the season. Knowing this, a friend of mine recently introduced me to this video of “12 Days,” an original compilation sung by an all-male a cappella vocal ensemble that formed at Indiana University back in 1996. This particular performance by the group named Straight No Chaser was from December 7, 1998, and it makes me smile every time I watch it. Hope it will do the same for you:
Also, because my heroine in A Summer in Europe is a HUGE Andrew Lloyd Webber fan — and so am I! — I wanted to share this second music video with you as well. It’s performed by the legendary Sarah Brightman, who originated the lead female role in Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (and she was, in fact, Webber’s wife for a time, too). Below she’s singing “I Believe in Father Christmas.”
Wishing all who celebrate a very Merry Christmas this weekend, and to everyone everywhere I wish you a most happy holiday season. May 2012 be a year of dreams fulfilled, good health, peace on earth and much joy!

Merry Christmas.
Thank you, Liz!! Merry Christmas to you as well

Marilyn, I love the Straight No Chaser song. It always makes me smile, and it’s so clever. I love cleverness with my music!
I’ll listen to the Sarah Brightman one now. And a very happy Christmas to you, and everyone else!

Michelle, I’m so glad “12 Days” is one you like, too! I love the cleverness as well and only wish I’d heard it sooner — their harmonies are just wonderful! Wishing you a very Happy Christmas

The first one is brilliant! Loved it! How do they remember all those words? Last night my brother emailed me a priest and rabbi joke, and I had trouble remembering it after the short time it took me to walk downstairs and tell it to my husband. (Next time I’ll print it out.)
Sarah Brightman is a lovely singer. And her outfit is gorgeous.
LOL, Edie! I *know*!!! Not only do they have to remember the words and when to come in on time, but they have to stay in tune! This last point alone would be my great failing, never mind the other requirements

Marilyn,
Wishing you and your family a loveliest of Christmases with enough jolly spice to add the chuckles.
Always love Sarah Brightman and her ingenious and fantasy-like costumes.
Mary Jo, I really love Sarah Brightman’s costumes, too! She has such a sense of the dramatic about her, doesn’t she?! And that incredible vocal range…wow
. And thank you for the Christmas wishes (I’m looking forward to that “jolly spice”!!) — I wish you the merriest of holidays, too.

As a Hoosier, I have to insist that all of you check out the SNC website & please attend a concert and buy their CDs.. You won’t regret spending the money.
Cate, if SNC ever happens to be in the area, I’d love to see them live! Their harmonies were wonderful and I was really impressed.
