Hooked on Pinterest

Three months ago I had no idea what Pinterest was. Now, I’m totally hooked. In case you don’t know what Pinterest is, let me tell you about it (warning: Pinterest can be addictive!) Basically, Pinterest is an online pinning board (bulletin board, if you prefer the expression) that allows you to organize and share the things you love with others. It’s visual social media at it’s best.

I first started hearing the Pinterest buzz on Facebook and I was less than enthusiastic only because I need another social media outlet like I need a hole in the head. But so many of my friends were “pinning” I couldn’t ignore it any longer and I had to see what the fuss was about, so I went over and took a look at a few boards. That was all it took to suck me in.

The best part about Pinterst is that you don’t have to come up with anything witty to say. In fact, you don’t say anything at all. Your pictures do all the talking for you. I’ve spent hours this past holiday season, viewing boards full of holiday decorations (like this awesome wreath snowman), recipes, home improvement tips, jewelry, clothing, the list goes on.

Another best part about Pinterest? You make up your own categories. I have a Books I love board, and a writing advice board and a Best Blogs to follow board (guess which blog made that board?). I’ve gotten ideas for Christmas presents, like the awesome rubber gloves you see pictured here (yes, I gave away 4 pairs of these to friends and they SWEAR they have never loved washing dishes more!)

I’ve also gotten recommendations on books, movies, traveling tips, etc. You can follow other “pinners” and they can follow you. I also think it’s a great way to connect with other writers and fans and I plan to put my Pinterest link up next to my Twitter and Facebook link when my new website goes live at the end of the month.

If you Pinterest, please follow me and I’ll follow you. My boards are minimal compared to a lot of others, but I’m building them up and I love browsing through friend’s boards to see what they love. Here is my link:  http://pinterest.com/mariageraci/

Maria, what fun! But now you’re tempting me, and I don’t need one more diversion. I goof off enough without it. But I love that snowman wreath! And the rubber gloves. Where did you get them?

  2. Maria Geraci says:

Edie, I got them by browsing off other people’s boards. You click on the picture and it takes you to the website where the picture originated from. It’s a little hard to explain Pinterest, but you basically browse through boards you are following, clicking on items that interest you. This is in turn leads you to the website where you can find out information about the item. I know it sounds weird, but believe me, it’s very easy!

Who I’m with you, I don’t need another social media. But this looks so fun, and when your a writer, its a good way to keep your name out there. I’m going to check this out. If anything it will be fun.

  4. Nice post, Maria! I’m checking out your Pinterest board next. Will leave a message there for you.

  5. Hi Maria! I remember seeing those gloves on pinterest! Like you, I’m new there, but I’ll look for you! In addition to pinning stuff I like, I’m using it as a virtual inspiration board for my WIP, too.

Liz, what a great idea! I’m going to add a wip inspirational board. I’ve done real “live” boards (like Jenny Crusie does) and have found them very useful.

  6. Oh, Maria!! I keep hearing about Pinterest and have been VERY afraid of looking further into it because I KNOW I would love something like that. Sigh. If I ever do give in to the temptation, though, I will look you up right away ;). Thanks for telling us more about it!
