Guest Blog and Giveaway with Carey Baldwin

I’ve known Carey Baldwin for some time now, and not only is she gorgeous but she’s one of the sweetest authors I’ve met, and one of the most talented. Just read the amazing reviews for her debut romantic suspense, First Do No Evil! Oh, and I forgot to mention…she’s a doctor! Yes, a real doctor, she doesn’t just play one in books. Join me in welcoming Carey!

First of all I want to thank Lori Brighton and the crew at Magical Musings for inviting me to be on the blog today. I’m so delighted to be here!

I also want to say that I found Liz Kreger’s post earlier in the month, in which she shared her personal experience with breast cancer, very moving. I lost my mom to breast cancer when she was near the age that I am now. This year, I wanted to truly celebrate her life and the life of every person who has struggled with this terrible disease. So before I tell you about my new release, I’d like to share my experience on Team Bodice Rippers.

Team Bodice Rippers consists of me, Tessa Dare, Leigh LaValle and Courtney Milan. With the help of our community, the romance community, we were able to raise over $10,000 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer to help with research for finding a cure and for support for those living with breast cancer today.  You can view our team page here.

I’m sending out a huge hug and giant-size thank you to each and every person who either made a direct donation to our team, or purchased our charity anthology, THREE WEDDINGS AND A MURDER. The anthology was a limited edition, and all profits went directly to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. For those of you who missed the anthology, the individual novellas will be available from each author at some point in the future. You can check our websites for information.

In addition to fundraising for the Avon Walk we…walked! With Leigh LaValle cheering us on from her nursery with her brand new infant in her arms, Tessa, Courtney and I set out on a wonderful journey. Our walk took place Sept. 22 of this year in Santa Barbara California.

Along the way we made some amazing friends, like these ladies, Team Blister Sisters.

Every step of the way -and there were a heck of a lot of steps on this two-day journey- we were cheered and encouraged by men with pink beards, jokesters, and even puppies in pink tutus. We slept in pink tents…even our blisters were pink!

Was it hard? I’d be lying if I said otherwise. In fact one member of our team, Courtney Milan, is still recovering from an injury she sustained on the walk.  But walking for two days is nothing compared to living with breast cancer, and I can’t think of a more wonderful journey than the one I shared with the fantastic men and women who were part of the Avon Walk.  So if you are wondering if you can make a difference, the answer is yes! You can!

If I can shift gears for a minute, I’d like to also tell you about my new release

FIRST DO NO EVIL. It just so happens that my book opens on Halloween. And Halloween happens to be the worst day of the year for my heroine, Dr. Skylar Novak.

For those of you who are interested, I’ve pasted the blurb here.

One killer is in her blood. The other is in her house.

There’s a killer lurking in Dr. Skylar Novak’s family tree: the gene for breast cancer. That’s why her brilliant brother invented the Bella vaccine. But even if the miracle drug protects her from the cancer that took her mother’s life, it can’t save Sky from the flesh and bone evil stalking her in secret.

When the killer strikes, detective Daniel Benson finds himself in the wrong place at the right time. The bold detective manages to save Sky’s life…just in time for her to return the favor. Survival leads to seduction, and Danny risks everything—his career, even his life, to keep Sky safe. But will the buried sins they uncover cost him her heart?

Danny’s strong arms may hold her close, but only Sky can stop the terror that’s coming next…

Warning: Contents include: One heart-melting hero—good luck getting this delicious detective out of your head. One reluctant heroine—wielding a Glock was never on her to-do list. One crazed villain—an entire flock of baa baa black sheep won’t be enough to put you to sleep. And a lifesaving vaccine with one deadly side effect—murder.

I’m happy to give an electronic copy of FIRST DO NO EVIL to one commenter today

Lori, thanks again to you and your readers for having me!

Carey, welcome to Magical Musings! I’m a breast cancer survivor, and this means a lot to me. Love it that you have a breast cancer vaccine in your book. I’d have to read it for that alone, but the plot sounds great, too. 🙂

  2. Hi Edie,
Thanks for having me today! I’m so sorry to hear that you have had to face breast cancer, but I love to hear the word “survivor”. On the Avon walk, we met so many wonderful people, and heard so many inspiring stories. It’s one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had- to stand beside so many courageous men and women. And thanks for your kind words about the book!

  3. Lori,
What a sweet introduction! When you and I first met, we were just starting out on our journey in writing, although I think you had more manuscripts under your belt…
It’s fantastic to see your success, but I always knew you were LOADED with talent!

    Hi Carey!
I loved your anthology as well as Do No Evil! Do No Evil was deliciously scary and definitely worth may repeat reads. How wonderful that you raised so much money for the Avon Walk. The Avon Walk is one of the few events (I live in the DC area) that I don’t mind being inconvenienced for. Are planning on doing another anthology again next year?

  5. Lena Diaz says:

Carey, Congratulations on raising so much money to fight breast cancer. And thank you as well. I have been blessed that even though both my mother and one of my sisters has had this horrible disease, both are survivors! I also wish you much success with your new release. I adored FIRST DO NO EVIL. Such an incredibly tension-filled story with smart, fresh writing unlike anything else I’ve ever read.

    • Lena, one of the statistics we heard at the walk was that the survival rate has now gone up to over seventy percent, and with early detection that number is a fantastic ninety-five percent! Wow.
And thanks for your good wishes with my book.
Speaking of “I adored”- I adored HE KILLS ME HE KILLS ME NOT and SIMON SAYS DIE. You are the twist master! Can’t wait for your Harlequin Intrigue release- that’s in March, I believe.

  6. Thanks Sharon! Great to see you! I’m not sure we’ll be doing another anthology, but I would love to do the walk again. In Santa Barbara, the community really came out and showed us support. Hmm. D.C. Now I’m thinking, what a great way to see the country- tour with all the Avon walk cities!
I’m glad you liked First Do No Evil. “Deliciously Scary”… love that! Thank you!

It is nice to meet you, Carey! You do not have to enter me into the drawing (although your books sounds like a great read), as I win way too many things on this website and other people need to win. I just like commenting and being a part of the site by reading. That is fantastic that you were able to raise so much money for breast cancer research. I work at a hosptial and we all recently participated in The Pink Glove Dance for breast cancer. We are hoping to win money to go to our Carle Cancer Center / Mills Breast Cancer facility and plan on using the money for our breast cancer patients in some fashion (not just to put in our pockets). The video is here if you are intersted in it: Breast Caner seems to be something that touches everyone in some way. Thanks so much for your post and I will add your book to my TBR list.

    • Oh hi, Amy! I clicked on your video and it is a hoot! I loved it! My favorite part was where everyone took each other’s pink-gloved hand. Everyone, you should definitely check this out. I hadn’t heard of the pink golve dance before but that’s a great idea. I’m sending lots of good wishes that you will win money for the Carle Cancer Center. You like what my mom used to call “good folk” . Thanks so much for your comment!

Hi Carey! Congrats to you and the bodice rippers for surpassing your $10K goal. The walk sounds like such an amazing experience. FDNE is a great read–smart and exciting (and so is the anthology). And your descriptions of Flagstaff really made me want to plan a visit. I’m looking forward to your next release 🙂

    • Hi Krista! Thanks for coming by! Actually Flagstaff is one of my favorite places, as well as my former home. I hope you get the chance to visit! Thanks so much for your comment.

    • Thank you, Gwen! I’m starting to itch to take a loooong walk just talking about this again. And you know, it really was the romance community that made it happen (Exceeding our $10,000 goal) Thousands of romance readers bought our anthology and many individuals dug deep in their own pockets with private donations to help us raise the money. Our publisher, Samhain, gave us a whopping donation that put us over the top. I cried the day we got that donation.
So thank you, Samhain, and thank you readers and fellow authors!
Leigh, Tessa, Courtney and I are very grateful.

  10. Sarah Andre says:

    Hello Carey!
My gosh, the Fall went so fast I forgot to ask how much you raised and how your walk went! Great to catch up here. It sounds like you met your goal, congratulations to the 4 of you. Walking for 2 days, sheesh. I’m impressed!

Love the anthology you 4 wrote, and how awesome that all the proceeds go to Breast Cancer Charities. You guys really rock.

  11. Thanks Sarah! We raised around $10,600, and thank you so much for your contribution! (Sarah was a very generous donor to our team). Tessa, Courtney and I had a wonderful two days, and we love the Avon Walk team, so a big shout out to them for putting together the fundraising event. We really missed our fourth, Leigh, but she was birthing a babe!
    Sarah thanks for your comment!

    • Thanks so much, Amy! I’m not sure how brave I am compared to those who walked while undergoing chemo etc. but I gained so much from the experience. I encourage anyone who is thinking about it, but hesitating to just go for it!
