New Year’s Opportunities

Ah, the first day of a new year. 2012 is behind us…and today marks a new milestone. While I enjoy reflecting on the past year, I’m eager to look at the 2013 calendar and all those blanks waiting for me to fill in. Three-hundred and sixty-five days of potential. Three-hundred and sixty-five days of opportunities.

My family has some big plans for the coming year. My authentic self has a few secret ones as well. Which ones will be a success? What will I learn from the not-so-successful ones? I feel like a kid in a candy store – or more like an adult woman with a purse addiction in a Coach outlet store – when I look at all the possibilities before me. Like Elizabeth Barrett Browning, I dwell in possibility.

How about you? What will 2013 hold for you?

Will you conceive a new dream or plan for your life? Realize a dream you’ve delayed over the years, like going back to school or learning a new language?

Overcome an old fear? Release guilt over a past failure?

Find a new friend? Find an old friend and get reacquainted?

Will you reach toward a new aspiration? Overcome a new challenge?

A wise woman once told me that if you want to do something – really, really want to do something – you won’t make excuses not to. But if you don’t want to do something, you’ll find all kinds of excuses. She’s right. I also believe that you can want something very badly and still find excuses not to go for it because you don’t believe in yourself.

For today, give yourself a gold star for all the incredible things you’ve done with your life Picture from Microsoft clip artup to January 1st, 2013, and set aside a couple extra stars in a special place. Believe in yourself and all those fabulous blank spaces on the calendar. 2013 is your year to do something amazing…and you’re going to need those gold stars this time next year, I guarantee it.

Misty, what an inspiring post! Thank you! I woke up this morning filled with energy and enthusiasm. I’ve already started a change in my eating habits, and it’s making a difference. I think 2013 will be a fabulous year!

    • Misty Evans says:

That’s awesome, Edie! Good for you. Your health effects everything else, so taking care of yourself and eating right is a wonderful way to kick off the new year.

  2. Amy Atwell says:

Misty, thank you for this lovely kick off of 2013. I’m reviewing last year’s goals this afternoon, and trying to sort out what I *really* want to accomplish in 2013. There is so much potential in 365 days! I also love that I get to give myself a gold star. I actually have a few hundred little sparkly star stickers that I bought last year at an office supply store. I think I’ll pull them out and set them by my paper calendar. I like the idea of rewarding myself each day. (and stars have fewer calories than ice cream, right?)
Happy New Year to all of our Magical Musings readers!

Amy, that’s a cool thing to do with those stars. They always remind me of grade school and that feeling of accomplishment. And why shouldn’t we give ourselves a pat on the back when we do something that makes our heart sing? As Edie’s post yesterday pointed out, we’ve all accomplished a great deal in 2012, no matter what physical proof we can show for it. Some days, it’s good to place a gold star on our calendar just for getting out of bed!

Good luck with setting goals this afternoon. Dream big!

  3. Misty,
Thank you! This was just the post I needed to read today…you’ve inspired me…and I may just have to dig out those gold stars I used to have when I was a teacher ;). It’s funny how it’s the recognition itself that’s really the “reward” — those moments when we acknowledge that we really did something in pursuit of our goal, even if it was just a small step forward.
Wishing you a very Happy 2013 with lots of wonderful days in the year ahead!!

Marilyn, you hit it on the head. We crave recognition and I don’t think any of us can get enough of it. But it’s an addiction that’s worth rewarding because it requires so little to make us feel good and motivate us to tackle our next mountain.

      Happy New Year!

  4. Amy Remus says:

Great post to start out the new year, Misty! There are so many things I want to accomplish in 2013 and am sick of wanting them, but not really believing in myself that I can do them. I need to listen to what Yoda says, “Do or do not. There is no try.” I should print that out and stick it on the fridge. Happy New Year!

    • Misty Evans says:

That Yoda is pretty smart! LOL. But I think there’s a lot to be said about trying. We don’t all hit a home run the first time (or every time) we step up to the plate…we have to try and try again until something clicks. That’s what perseverence and practice teach us. We’re going to fail…a lot…but hopefully we learn with every failure and do better on the next try. I say, embrace Yoda and also Einstein, who said, “You never fail until you stop trying.”

  5. Donnell says:

Misty, lovely post! I’m working one day at a time, but you’ve certainly given me lots to think about–lots of possibilities. Happy New Year, Magical Musings!

    • Misty Evans says:

Happy New Year, Donnell! One day at a time is a great way to start the new year. Best wishes for your continued success. I’m looking forward to the release of Deadly Recall!

  6. A very inspiring and positive post to kick off the year. Thank you! And the words by the wise woman should be placed in the spotlight so others could draw inspiration and self-awareness from. Fantastic. Cheers!
