HE’S USED TO GETTING WHAT HE WANTS…
A former football star and one of Chicago’s top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker’s help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator’s table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate—and he’s not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that.
AND WHAT HE WANTS IS HER
A savvy businesswoman, Brooke knows she needs to play ball with the U.S. Attorney’s office—even if it means working with Cade. No doubt there’s a sizzling attraction beneath all their sarcastic quips, but Brooke is determined to keep things casual. Cade agrees—until a surprising turn of events throws his life into turmoil, and he realizes that he wants more than just a good time from the one woman with whom he could fall terrifyingly, irresistibly in love. . .
One of the things I like most about Julie James’ stories is that she writes really great characters. They are funny, smart, sarcastic and usually get what they want. You find that with both Cade and Brooke in Love Irresistibly. And boy do Cade and Brooke have the sarcastic tone down.
Cade was told by past girlfriends that he is “emotionally unavailable.” He is a very successful Assistant US Attorney and prefers to be in control of everything in his life. He has his reasons for not getting to close to women but it seems he just hasn’t found anyone that is able to get past his carefully placed walls. However, meeting Brooke and being forced to deal with one’s past he was hoping to forget will cause a man to go a little bit nuts and feel like he is losing control of his life and thus the walls start crumbling.
Brooke is general counsel at a restaurant company. She is an independent, career driven woman who is very good at her job but according to former boyfriends she is not a “big picture girl.” She has her close friend Ford that she grew up with, but outside of him she doesn’t have a lot of friends because she is working all the time. And in her dating life, she doesn’t seem to get past the fourth month of a relationship with anyone before they get fed up with her schedule.
Cade and Brooke together equals a lot of quips and sarcasm and jockeying for who is in control of the relationship. After all, their jobs require them to be in control most of the time. From the first meeting with Cade and Brooke I knew this was going to be a fun story to read. Julie James did not disappoint. Cade and Brooke understood each others work schedules so a casual affair made sense to them. They didn’t have to worry about getting too emotional and could just enjoy each other. But neither of them expected the chemistry they encountered when the two of them were together.
I really liked Ford in this story. He was a good friend to Brooke and was hilarious with some of the responses he would give her when she whined about something. I of course enjoyed characters from past books making an appearance as well. If you are looking for a smart, sexy contemporary romance read, I highly recommend Love Irresistibly by Julie James.
