Official Summary:

How far would you go to avenge your family and save the one you love?

In nineteenth-century England, Alaina Claiborne had a loving family, a cherished friend, and devoted servants. She spent her days riding across the grassy hills of the English countryside, joyful and at peace. Then tragedy strikes and her world is forever changed. Searching for those responsible is her only focus . . . until she meets Tristan.

Tristan Sheffield, a man of many talents, searches out those who don’t want to be found. His past is filled with secrets and deeds he would rather leave deeply buried. However, when his life unexpectedly entwines with Alaina’s, he soon discovers they share more than a mutual desire to catch a murderer. On their hunt for a man driven by greed, Tristan and Alaina find that love is the greatest weapon against evil, and they’ll stop at nothing to survive.

My Thoughts:

When I first started reading this story, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to read it because the beginning was so sad. Opening up with such a tragedy was hard for me to overcome, but I understand that it really set the story up and was necessary. I am a wimp when reading books with sad scenes in them so I almost put it down, but figured I had to keep going to get to the heart of the story. I am sure glad I kept reading. I really enjoyed Alaina Claiborne!

Alaina experienced tragedy when she was a little girl and keeps everything locked away, and blocking the horrific event that happened. She wants to avenge her parents murder and is still trying to come up with a plan when she meets Tristan. Now that he is in her life, she starts to relive the painful memories and the nightmares start up again. However, with Tristan in her life she feels safe and happy and allows herself to relive the past.

Tristan originally meets Alaina because of the investigation he is a part of, however, it quickly turns into something personal. Neither of them can deny their attraction to one another. There is so much trust and respect between the two and I loved it. Together, with the help of Tristan’s friends and fellow agents, they embark on quite an adventure to bring down criminals that the British government has been after for twenty years.

MK McClintock does a great job of balancing the romance and adventure in this story. I loved the characters she created and the great dialogue between them. Alaina was so strong but also knew when she was in over her head. The camaraderie between Tristan, Devon and Charles was so great and essentially Alaina inherited brothers who would protect her as if she was their sister.

I sometimes had a difficult time following the action scenes and could have used a little more detail. I had to reread some of them to make sure I followed who killed who, etc, however, it did not take away from the overall story. If you like reading historical romantic suspense books I recommend you give Alaina Claiborne a try!
