I’m really looking forward to this coming August (16-18th), to the Romance Writers of Australia’s annual conference. This year it is being held in Fremantle in Western Australia, about twenty minutes from where I live, and as I’m on the conference committee, I’m really closely involved in the planning and organizing of the event.

There are so many interesting workshops coming up, as well as a signing on the Saturday that readers and the general public can attend, which is being held by the Australian Romance Readers Association at the conference. The Friday workshops are very interesting. There are two separate events, and honestly, I’d like to clone myself because both look amazing.

But I’m interested, how many of the authors who read this blog attend conferences and large signings, and how many readers would be interested in attending something like one of the Friday workshops, the Elizabeth Joley Conference, which is being hosted by Curtin University, and will consist of three streams of 8-9 papers presented on various aspects of the romance novel, including reader experiences, after a keynote address by Professor Imelda Whelehan on the relationship between romance writing and feminism?

And what about the signing? As a reader, do you enjoy attending signings? Things you love about them, things you don’t like so much?

If you’re at all interested in the Fremantle conference, you can find all the details here (and there is an early bird rate that ends at the end of April, so hurry if you are interested!).

Very impressive! And how cool that it’s so close to your home. And I would be very interested in that particular keynote address.

I love meeting other writers. And I still get excited about meeting favorite authors. I did that last year with Loretta Chase at RT, and she was so gracious and nice. It’s a thrill.

I’m going to the Barbara Vey Reader’s Appreciation Luncheon this Saturday, and will see a lot of authors and writer friends there. That will be fun.

    • Edie, me too! The address sounds so good. I’ve eventually chosen to go to the other event, which is a day-long workshop by Kim Hudson, based on her book The Virgin’s Promise: Writing Stories of Feminine Creative, Spiritual and Sexual Awakening. It was so hard to choose, but I’m really looking forward to Kim’s workshop!

  2. Michelle,
I have no doubt the annual Romance Writers of Australia conference will be AMAZING!! I would love to attend it…but that LONG flight is an issue ;).
I’ve been to a lot of conferences and have a few ahead this year. I always enjoy them but, also, get a bit drained by the noise and activity, so I have to build in some serious downtime afterward!

    • Marilyn, I haven’t attended a big writing conference since 2011. I’ve been to a smaller one since then, but I was helping with the organizing of that one, and didn’t relax as much.

I probably won’t have a chance to do much more than catch my breath with this one, either, but I’m looking forward to meeting some people I only ever talk to online!

    Hi Michelle,
I love meeting other writers and going to conferences. Unfortunately I find it easy to become overwhelmed while there though.

    Have fun!
