How I Get in the Mood… to Write Erotica by Zoey Williams
Finding time to write is hard. Many of us have full-time day jobs, long commutes, partners and/or kiddos. That’s half the battle. But once you do find that half an hour before the kids wake up or that stretch of time after everyone’s gone to bed, sometimes you don’t feel like writing. You’re exhausted, stressed, or maybe just experiencing a plain ol’ bout of writer’s block. Here are three easy tips that help me get in the mood to write erotica.
1. Read erotica.
Now this may seem like a no-brainer. Luckily, my day job consists of editing a lot of erotic projects. Before I started my Harlequin Cravings, I had read at least five of them. I read the top sellers for our lines. I paid attention to what exactly in their love scenes—inarguably the hardest thing to write– made my breath grow shallow. What words or phrases were especially powerful and visceral and made me hot and bothered?
You obviously have to be comfortable with your sexuality in order to write erotica. If you have an incredibly varied and exciting sex life and are a GODDESS in the bedroom—you’ve tried it all—congratulations. But for mere mortals like myself, I’m not incredibly experienced when it comes to all things sexy. Even if you never plan on writing a BDSM project, read the genre. Read some non-erotica romance to see how characters connect through dialogue (I have to write the stuff in between the love scenes, too!). There may be something in a scene you can use as inspiration, whether it be a situation, a place, a role-playing exercise, explicit dialogue or a even a position you never thought of!
2. Let my mind wander… aka fantasize.
Ever have a romantic encounter you wished had gone differently? Or even a romantic encounter you just wished would happen (ummm, Channing Tatum, anyone?)? What exactly would you want to happen? Would you like your date to a take charge alpha male or a perfect gentleman (or a little of both)? What would you ideally wear? Incorporate everything you wish would happen into your story because chances are your fantasies are very similar to what the average woman (and average reader) wants or is at least intrigued by.
3. Listen to music.
While I usually listen to my Crystal Castles Pandora radio station (I like music with a beat, but without lyrics, to keep me on track—while I love classical music as white noise for other activities, it doesn’t get me in the mood to write, especially erotica), I found an artist that was constantly playing in the background as I wrote my first erotic novella, THE DEMON’S FORBIDDEN PASSION. I highly recommend R&B singer Miguel’s two albums: All I Want is You (2010) and Kaleidoscope Dream (2012). My top picks are “Teach Me”, “The Thrill” and “Arch & Point.” I dare you to listen to these songs without getting chills all over. I dare you.
Thanks so much for sharing your tips, Zoey!

After turning to Tina Driscoll for one night of passionate release, he tries to keep his distance.
