Guest Post With Author Zoey Williams (And Giveaway!)

Update: The winner of the $15 gift card is Anna McK! Congrats!

Today, new paranormal author Zoey Williams is taking over the blog for me. She’s got a great guide to get you in the mood to write…(and Zoey also has a terrific new paranormal romance out–go, demons!). Zoey, welcome to the blog.

How I Get in the Mood… to Write Erotica by Zoey Williams

Finding time to write is hard. Many of us have full-time day jobs, long commutes, partners IMG_3814and/or kiddos. That’s half the battle. But once you do find that half an hour before the kids wake up or that stretch of time after everyone’s gone to bed, sometimes you don’t feel like writing. You’re exhausted, stressed, or maybe just experiencing a plain ol’ bout of writer’s block. Here are three easy tips that help me get in the mood to write erotica.

1.      Read erotica.

Now this may seem like a no-brainer. Luckily, my day job consists of editing a lot of erotic projects. Before I started my Harlequin Cravings, I had read at least five of them. I read the top sellers for our lines. I paid attention to what exactly in their love scenes—inarguably the hardest thing to write– made my breath grow shallow. What words or phrases were especially powerful and visceral and made me hot and bothered?

You obviously have to be comfortable with your sexuality in order to write erotica. If you have an incredibly varied and exciting sex life and are a GODDESS in the bedroom—you’ve tried it all—congratulations. But for mere mortals like myself, I’m not incredibly experienced when it comes to all things sexy. Even if you never plan on writing a BDSM project, read the genre. Read some non-erotica romance to see how characters connect through dialogue (I have to write the stuff in between the love scenes, too!). There may be something in a scene you can use as inspiration, whether it be a situation, a place, a role-playing exercise, explicit dialogue or a even a position you never thought of!

2.       Let my mind wander… aka fantasize.

Ever have a romantic encounter you wished had gone differently? Or even a romantic encounter you just wished would happen (ummm, Channing Tatum, anyone?)? What exactly would you want to happen? Would you like your date to a take charge alpha male or a perfect gentleman (or a little of both)? What would you ideally wear? Incorporate everything you wish would happen into your story because chances are your fantasies are very similar to what the average woman (and average reader) wants or is at least intrigued by.

3.       Listen to music.

While I usually listen to my Crystal Castles Pandora radio station (I like music with a beat, but without lyrics, to keep me on track—while I love classical music as white noise for other activities, it doesn’t get me in the mood to write, especially erotica), I found an artist that was constantly playing in the background as I wrote my first erotic novella, THE DEMON’S FORBIDDEN PASSION.  I highly recommend R&B singer Miguel’s two albums: All I Want is You (2010) and Kaleidoscope Dream (2012). My top picks are “Teach Me”, “The Thrill” and “Arch & Point.” I dare you to listen to these songs without getting chills all over. I dare you.

Thanks so much for sharing your tips, Zoey!

Zoey has a hot new release out now–THE DEMON’S FORBIDDEN PASSION.  Ready for a tease?

TheDemonsForbiddenPassionA battle rages within Ethan Phillips. By day, he’s a sexy firefighter saving lives in his community. At night, he’s a half-demon enraptured by carnal desire. And on this night, after a harrowing rescue dredges up memories of his tragic past, Ethan’s hunger is stronger than ever.

After turning to Tina Driscoll for one night of passionate release, he tries to keep his distance. He knows the curse that followed him into adulthood will mean dire consequences for the gentle, compassionate nurse. But each time he tries to tear himself away, the flames erupting between them only intensify….

Time for today’s giveaway!  One lucky commenter will win a $15 gift card. Zoey told us the songs that get her in the mood to write–now it’s your turn to share. What songs get you in the mood for romance?  The contest will stay open until noon (Central Time) on 8/8/13. The winner will be randomly selected. Good luck!

It is nice to meet you her,e, Zoey. I do like meeting new authors and love the ‘behind the scenes’ type posts. For us that don’t write we have no idea what it takes to write, so I enjoy posts like this. I have only recently started reading erotic romance and am very selective because I do want the romance and feelings and emotions to consume me – not just the sex acts themselves. And as far as music that gets me in the mood to read romance? That is hard to pin down. I do have a “romance” playlist for setting the mood with my husband or just when I want to hear love songs and it has all genres of music on it. When a particular song speaks romance and love to me I add it to that list. I like a lot of country love songs, but sometimes those rock love ballads are pretty powerful, too. Like ‘Unskinny Bop’ by Poison. Just kidding. 🙂 Congrats on the release! I will head over to your website and check out your books!

    • Hi Amy!

I’m actually looking to write more “behind the scenes” blog posts in the future. Do you have any burning questions, anything you’d really like to read about? I’d love to compile some ideas and share some more tips and tricks.

Also, I don’t have a website yet, but feel free to like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter!

Hello Zoey! What a great interview!I don’t think there is a specific type of music that works for me everytime. 😛 But I do love to listen to anything rock when I’m stuck. I’m not sure why but something about the high energy level gets me going when I’m stuck.

  7. lisa a roberts says:

  10. Elizabeth H. says:

Music to get me in a romantic mood would be some Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson. But if the romance is a little sexier, I’d listen to some Rihanna.

  15. Ruth Gutscher says:

I love all kinds of music… but when I’m m feeling romantic I love Etta. James. And blues…otherwise I am a classic rock kind of girl… 😉

    • Etta James. You are a woman after my own heart, Ruth! I’m a huge fan of hers. But I have to admit, it mostly gets me in a sassy mood– like when I sing “Tell Mama” around the house in my pajamas. (There may be some singing into a hairbrush involved…) 🙂

  16. I gotta say probably Nickleback will be my pick.

  17. Edie Ramer says:

Zoey, welcome to MM. I love the blues for romantic moods, sung by men or women.

  19. Kara Nix says:

Thanks for the contests! Any rock band that usually is hard rock and does a soft rock song that is very rare to hear usually does it. Lol

    Hi Zoey,

Welcome to Magical Musings! I’m all for different music at different times. I love writing action scenes to rock music. 🙂
Dale Mayer`s last blog was …3 books for the price of 99 cents!!!

  21. Laurie Rakoski says:

I enjoyed your tips and thanks for sharing. Music feeds my soul on different levels… If I’m seducing my hubby it’s slow and easy classical music. If I’m looking to get his attention on a more carnal level it’s classic rock. If I’m just playing a scene in my mind what could happen and where, it’s club music loud.

  22. Shelly says:

😛 give me some sultry jazz! something I can sway to!

  23. latisha depoortere says:

I would have to say anything Carrie Underword love her. I also love the music in the movie Safe Haven so good one of my favorites! This sounds like a great book can’t wait to read it. Thank you for the great giveaway!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  25. Anna McK. says:

I love to listen to Josh Groban and the Moody Blues. 🙂

  26. Barbara Elness says:

I don’t have any particular songs that get me in the mood for romance, but Sarah McLachlan’s songs would probably do it. 😀

  27. Kimh says:
