Strange Ways

Greetings! My name is Jennifer Estep, and I’m the New York Times bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. I also write the Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series, and I’m the author of the Bigtime paranormal romance series.

Jennifer-Estep-4-240x300I want to say thanks to Edie and everyone else at Magical Musings for asking me to join the blog. Thanks so much, everyone!

So this is my first post as a Magical Musings blogger, and as I sat down to write it, I couldn’t help but think that life works in strange ways. Back in the mid-2000s when I had just sold my first book, I needed to set up my own website. So I started looking around at author websites, and I ran across Edie’s site. I liked the style, so I e-mailed her to see who the designer was. She graciously took the time to answer all my questions.

Over the years, Edie and I have become friends, e-mailing about books, writing, and cheese (we both love cheese), among other things. I got to meet Edie in person, and I’ve also hung out with Liz, Michelle, and some of the other Magical Musings folks at various conferences. They are all fabulous folks.

And now, here I am, years later, blogging with Edie, Liz, Michelle, and all the other Magical Musings folks. And it all started with that first e-mail to Edie asking about her website.

Yeah, life really does work in strange ways sometimes. So the next time you e-mail an author with a question, tweet with someone about a book that you’ve both enjoyed, or chat with someone at a conference, just remember that you could be starting a beautiful friendship.

Strange ways can be good ways. Cheers, everyone!

To celebrate my first official post at Magical Musings, I’m giving away a print copy of Heart of Venom, my latest Elemental Assassin book. To enter, leave a comment on this post talking about some of the ways your life has been strange or good, or some of the friendships you’ve made.

Jennifer, you know what else is so strange and so good is that I first knew you from a guest post you did – and I’m pretty sure it was on Cynthia Eden’s blog! I was the winner of a print copy of Karma Girl. I read it in one day and loved it! It was unlike any book I’d read. I even brought it to my local RWA chapter meeting and passed it around the table. 🙂

And now, years later, you and Cynthia are both NY Times bestselling authors, and you’re both part of Magical Musings! And you’re both friends of mine! I consider myself lucky.

I guess the strangest part of my life was that I didn’t think about trying to become an author until… Well, now :S It was just a hobby when I was younger, and while I was pretty good at it and I always enjoyed myself with it, but I never considered that it might actually be my calling until I moved across the country to try and become a photographer, only to have that desire fade away when I realized I could be a lot more creative and get more accomplished as a writer.

    Does that count?

  4. Jennifer, I am SO glad you and Edie exchanged those emails long ago. I’m thrilled that you’ve joined the MM team. Edie and I met Cynthia Eden in a similar way, when she was still with Imajinn and we were unpublished. It feels like a long time ago, and here we still are!

It’s wonderful to have you here at MM, and I’m so glad your path and Edie’s crossed those years ago!! I’m always grateful, too, for the blogging friends I have here and the way we get to know people in this industry, even when the journey we take is sometimes a meandering one… Many of my dearest friendships began in a similar way ;).

Hi Jennifer – It is nice to meet you here. I know exactly what you are saying! I am just a reader (I always feel like I have to clarify that so people don’t know I am an author I guess). I have met so many fantastic people just interacting on Twitter or Facebook or this blog. Michelle gave me my first chance at being on a review team here which has led to me starting my own blog and having authors ask me to beta read for them. That is so extremely fun. It has led to some wonderful friendships! Welcome to the blog and I look forward to learning more about you and your books!

    Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to Magical Musings!! I think one of the greatest gifts about my writing career is the people I’ve met a long the way. In some ways writing is a small world but it’s an enduring one with friendships developing across the miles/years.

I know I’m grateful for all the friends I’m made!

Hi Jennifer! It’s good to see you here on Magical Musings. I just finished reading Heart of Venom, so I don’t need to be entered to win a copy. I loved it, just like the rest of the fantastic series, by the way.
The way my life has been strange is that I never thought I’d leave my home in California, where I lived all my life. I worked at the same job for 30 years and never thought I’d have the courage to make any kind of change. Now here I am, living in Florida, working in City government and loving it. And I get to go back to California and act like a tourist, checking out stuff I never did when I lived there. 😀

  13. Bn100 — Thanks! I also have some folks from school that I still keep in touch with.

Barbara — Thanks! I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed the book. Changing jobs can be scary, but it sounds like you are really enjoying the change. Glad you are doing well.
