Text Talk Gone Wild

Last week I had a craving for In-N-Out Burger. In-N-Out, for those of you who might not be familiar with it, is the BEST drive-thru hamburger restaurant on the planet. If you live in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah or Texas, you’re in luck and can get a double double with fries and a drink like I occasionally splurge on. And if you don’t live in one of those states, come visit me and I’ll take you! Anyway, because it is the yummiest of burgers, there is always a long line. Like really long.

So there my hubby was, waiting in line for me while I was home writing, and it was taking forever. He texted me: I’m still in line at In-N-Out. I think it had been something like twenty minutes. So I texted back: Yowsa!

And guess what happened? The autocorrect on my iPhone changed it to Toads.

I found this highly amusing. How the heck does yowsa become toads? After backspacing and typing my Yowsa again so it stuck and sending it off, I typed in Toads!

You know, because I was suffering from severe hunger pains and wondered if it might change to Yowsa! It didn’t. So then I decided to find out what other trickery autocorrect had up its sleeve.

I typed in jiggy and hey there, got jiffy. I typed in yippee and bonehead and razzmatazz.  They all stuck! Gadzooks did too. Then I typed in crapplet and got grappler. Willy-nilly turned into Willy-Billy. (I think this means we should watch out for anyone named Billy. Just kidding if your name is Billy.)

Googly moogly turned into goodly mildly

As a writer, I totally geeked out over this. How often have I struggled for just the right word in my novels? How often do I repeat words and thankfully my awesome editors catch the repetition—sometimes in the same paragraph! Sheesh. If I’d known I could busy myself with texts to my hubby and discover new words for old words, I would have been on it a lot sooner. LOL

Lastly, I typed in humdinger. It changed to… any guesses?… gunsights

Oh, and hey, Happy 11-12-13! This is the second to last consecutive series of date numbers this century! (Next year’s 12/13/14 will be the last.) And you know what this means, don’t you? There’s a rush to the altar! Couples love dates with patterns (and heck, there’s no way to forget your anniversary now). To celebrate this special day, and my book, KISSING THE MAID OF HONOR, I’ve got a giveaway on my personal blog. I hope you’ll stop by and check it out!  http://www.robinbielman.com/blog

So tell me, have you had any texting or autocorrect mishaps? Have a word to throw into my mix? Text it to me! Kidding. Leave me a comment.  Any comment! 😀

Robin, that’s hilarious! I’d probably have typed in a lot of different words, too, to see what would happen. And, no, I can’t think of any funny autocorrect mishaps.

I saw that on the morning news about the consecutive days, and so many people wanting to get married on it. I think it’s a good idea. Having a consecutive (or same) date will make it easy to remember the anniversary. No excuses there.

This cracks me up. I use the Swype keyboard on my Android phone and I hate the auto correct feature. I am forever correcting myself to people because I never look over my texts before sending them. I am horrible at that. Then I get mad at myself and my phone. It is especially bad around a certain time of the month. 🙂

    • Hi Amy! I’m one of those look-at-my-text-before-I-hit-send gals. I’m pretty much that way with everything, actually. You should see how long it takes me to tweet. LOL Of course I still have typos sometimes, but usually not whole new words! The other day I also sent a text – to the wrong person! Sheesh. Thanks for commenting! <3

I have disabled the autocorrect because it was always correcting the words I wanted but my sister sends me all kind of crazy messages and then she always sends ooopsss that was a mistake, I meant… funny way to pass your time Robin and I’m really hungry right now so I imagine those burgers and I am jealous!

  4. Lol Robin! I’ve had a few mishaps. For some reason my old phone used to change the into regent. I have no idea why but it always did it. So annoying.

Now I want a burger ! That’s just mean 🙂 Autocorrect gets me in trouble all the time, luckily most people understand and if you don’t, tough because I can’t change it after it sends it.

    • Hi Rachel! Here… I’ll go halvsies (Totally had to type that twice because autocorrect made it halves. LOL) with you – but only cuz it’s you! And LOL! Yeah, you can’t change something once it’s sent. I bet a lot of people wish they could, though. 😉 Thank you for visiting me here! <3

Well, it certainly makes for interesting texting! So, did you ever get your burger?

  7. Hi Robin,

I’m chiming in here, because AutoCorrect either pisses me off when I’m in a hurry or makes me laugh. I know I can shut it off, but I don’t because sometimes, I really need it!! BTW…Don’s idea of a treat, is a Double Double with Cheese, animal style. Really the best burgers around. And priced so well.

    Happy Day!!

    • Hi Charlene! Thank you for chiming in! And oh my gosh, you just totally described my feelings about autocorrect! Great minds think alike. 😉 Or rather, I’m latching on to your great mind. Your hubby’s got good burger taste! Oh, and we often get a patty for our dog, Harry. Yep, they make special patties for your pet!

    LOL, Robin!!
Just got home from a parent event at my son’s school tonight. I texted him just before things got started and — I’m mystified that my phone does this! — often when I text the word “too” it ends up coming up as “Rio.” 😛 NO idea why!!
And those burgers sound delicious…someday I hope I’ll get to try one!

  9. LOL, Robin. Some of the funniest things I’ve read are from the Damn You, Autocorrect site, where people can take a screen capture of their text and upload it, where autocorrect has changed what they meant to say. Really, really funny 🙂

I love the funny auto correct texts. Laugh my a** off over some of them and blush over others. I haven’t had anything too funny happen with mine, but occasionally I type so fast and hit send without reading, that I get a ??? back from my sons or husbands, because autocorrect has changed several words and my texts make no sense. LOL.
