I’ll admit, 2013 was full of surprises.
Some of them were really pleasant and unbelievably exciting. Some were disappointing or heart-wrenchingly sad. Some were just unexpected challenges thrown in front of me or in the path of someone I love. But, whatever their nature, I’ve been trying to practice gratitude.
In the case of some of the bad news (a friend who got a critical medical diagnosis, close family members who were sick or needed emergency operations, a car accident I had when someone backed into me…etc.), that gratitude takes the form of being thankful the situation wasn’t worse, or that there was some small redeeming grace amid the misfortune. In the case of the challenging news, I was grateful that we could face the problem with friends and family by our side and, together, brainstorm ways to handle whatever arose. And with the good news, well…I’m just very appreciative that the year brought some blessings our way, too! I hope you all had some wonderfully happy things happen in your 2013 as well.
In the writing world, I published 3 projects last year, and I’m proud to say that there were things to be grateful for with each of them. Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (Amazon/B&N) was my January 2013 romantic comedy release, and I found out in late December that it was named the #1 Austenesque Contemporary Novel on the Austenprose Top Jane Austen-Inspired Books of 2013 List!! As a site that reviews just about every Jane-Austen-related work published in any given year, this was a huge piece of good news!
A novel I released in October 2013, The Road to You (Amazon/B&N), was my coming-of-age romantic mystery, and it was a bit of a leap of faith to step outside my usual genre. That story, I’m delighted to report, was selected by B&N General Fiction Book Club Moderator Deb Haupt as one of her Best Novels of 2013!! Given the number of books Deb reviews, this was a really big honor for me.
And then there was The Sweet Temptations Collection (Amazon/B&N), which I’d published back in May 2013. That trio of stories hit the USA Today Bestseller List in September, and the moment I found out about that remains one of the most exciting things that’s ever happened to me professionally. I still say a silent “thank you” to every single reader who bought the collection whenever I think about that day…
But 2014 is a fresh year with most of its days completely unwritten yet. I’m hoping we’ll all have more happy news by the end of it than sad news, but I’m trying to be open and appreciative of whatever comes. And I am — as always — truly grateful for all of my Magical Musings sisters and for all of you who visit us, read our posts, and leave comments sometimes. Thank you so much for being a part of our little corner of the blogosphere!
What’s something that you were especially grateful for in 2013? Any good things already happen for you in 2014? Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a joyous New Year!
