Gratitude…and Embracing Whatever 2014 Brings

I’ll admit, 2013 was full of surprises.

Some of them were really pleasant and unbelievably exciting. Some were disappointing or heart-wrenchingly sad. Some were just unexpected challenges thrown in front of me or in the path of someone I love. But, whatever their nature, I’ve been trying to practice gratitude.

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match - smallIn the case of some of the bad news (a friend who got a critical medical diagnosis, close family members who were sick or needed emergency operations, a car accident I had when someone backed into me…etc.), that gratitude takes the form of being thankful the situation wasn’t worse, or that there was some small redeeming grace amid the misfortune. In the case of the challenging news, I was grateful that we could face the problem with friends and family by our side and, together, brainstorm ways to handle whatever arose. And with the good news, well…I’m just very appreciative that the year brought some blessings our way, too! I hope you all had some wonderfully happy things happen in your 2013 as well.

In the writing world, I published 3 projects last year, and I’m proud to say that there were things to be grateful for with each of them. Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (Amazon/B&N) was my January 2013 romantic comedy release, and I found out in late December that it was named the #1 Austenesque Contemporary Novel on the Austenprose Top Jane Austen-Inspired Books of 2013 List!! As a site that reviews just about every Jane-Austen-related work published in any given year, this was a huge piece of good news!

Book Blitz - RoadToYouA novel I released in October 2013, The Road to You (Amazon/B&N), was my coming-of-age romantic mystery, and it was a bit of a leap of faith to step outside my usual genre. That story, I’m delighted to report, was selected by B&N General Fiction Book Club Moderator Deb Haupt as one of her Best Novels of 2013!! Given the number of books Deb reviews, this was a really big honor for me.

And then there was The Sweet Temptations Collection (Amazon/B&N), which I’d published back in May 2013. That trio of stories hit the USA Today Bestseller List in September, and the moment I found out about that remains one of the most exciting things that’s ever happened to me professionally. I still say a silent “thank you” to every single reader who bought the collection whenever I think about that day… ;-)

Sweet Temptations collection - Medium - jpgBut 2014 is a fresh year with most of its days completely unwritten yet. I’m hoping we’ll all have more happy news by the end of it than sad news, but I’m trying to be open and appreciative of whatever comes. And I am — as always — truly grateful for all of my Magical Musings sisters and for all of you who visit us, read our posts, and leave comments sometimes. Thank you so much for being a part of our little corner of the blogosphere!

What’s something that you were especially grateful for in 2013? Any good things already happen for you in 2014? Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a joyous New Year!

Marilyn, you should be so proud! I love your books, and I’m sure you deserve every award you get.

I’m grateful for so much. On the personal side, my husband was in a motorcycle accident that resulted in a couple broken bones. But it could’ve been a lot worse, and I’m very glad he was wearing protective clothing. On my business side, I’m happy with my new Rescued Hearts contemporary romance series. It’s a great fit for me. As for 2014, I have lots of plans. I just need to learn to write faster. 🙂

Edie, thank you!! Your encouragement and support have cheered me MANY times! I’m so grateful for YOU. xoxo

I’m really sorry your husband had that motorcycle accident but, as you said, I’m glad the gear he was wearing kept him somewhat protected. I’ve been so aware of the dangers on the road this past year… People are talking on the cell phones and texting constantly — the inattention of some motorists have me esp. worried because my son starts driving this year. (I expect 2014 to age me more than most years just because of this, LOL.)

And I second your wish that you could write faster — I *love* your Rescued Hearts series, and you know how much I adored reading Christmas at Angel Lake!! Here’s to you writing more of these funny, heartwarming romances in the months ahead :).

Marilyn, you’re so sweet. The texting is scary. We were at the show watching The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and my husband said the young woman in front of him texted through the entire movie. She missed a good movie, and I bet it was irritating for her friends – as well as for my husband. (If I’d been my husband, I would’ve tapped her shoulder and told her it wasn’t allowed, but I didn’t notice.)

Thank you for your kind words. I am going to try to set a certain number of hours to write a day. I’m starting tomorrow. lol

Edie, my son has gotten in the bad habit of keeping his phone near him while we’re watching movies at home, and I’ve had to physically separate him from the texting object :). Drives me crazy!
p.s. Glad you’re back to regular writing tomorrow!!

  2. Congratulations on those wonderful awards, Marilyn! So well deserved! And I hope you know how excited I was for you with your Sweet Temptations Collection. Something I was especially grateful for in 2013 is probably connecting with some very special readers. Women whose kind words and support really went above and beyond and we’ve become friends now, too, and that means the world to me. I’m also very grateful for my Secret Wishes series of books. Those were a real turning point for me and I’m excited to be writing category romance.

Wishing you the very best in 2014, Marilyn! (I’m always so grateful for you!)

  3. Marilyn, again congrats on your USA Today listing. So, so, so exciting.

And well done on everything you accomplished in 2013. It is so wonderful to share the writing journey with talented people like you, and it always inspires me.

    • Michelle,
Thank you, my dear!! I feel the same way about getting to share this journey with you ;). And I really LOVE how you branched into writing fantasy as well as historical recently — very exciting!!
