I Like Monsters (And I cannot lie!)

Update: Our giveaway winner is Alexisa! Congratulations! I will email you with prize details.

Considering that I write paranormal romance novels and dark romantic suspense tales, the fact that I like monsters probably isn’t surprising. I’ve been a monster fan for years—pretty much as soon as I discovered the Wolfman and good old Dracula, I was hooked.

But what I like the most? Seeing new spins on the classic monster tales.

There’s a new movie opening this week—I, FRANKENSTEIN. I can’t wait to see this flick because, for once, Frankenstein’s monster isn’t some unattractive, bumbling beast. He’s sexy and strong—a force to be reckoned with.  I am counting down the minutes until I see that one!

It’s the twists that appeal to me the most.  Why should anyone—even monsters—be what we expect them to be?  The thrill is in the surprise. The shock.  So when I write, I like to throw out convention and try to surprise with my character.  I actually have a plan when I write—every 100 pages, I make a big reveal designed to throw the reader off-balance. Those reveals are what keep my fingers flying as I type!

BurnForMeNext week, I have a new, very dark paranormal romance series that will be releasing with Kensington Brava—the first book is called BURN FOR ME. The hero in this book is  a phoenix shifter. Each time that he dies (the poor man dies a lot), he burns…and rises from the ashes.  Each “death” brings him a little closer to the edge of sanity.  He becomes more dangerous and more powerful with each burn.

Ahem…can you tell I had a blast writing that book?

So how about we do a giveaway?  I’ve got a copy of BURN FOR ME that I want to send out to one commenter. To enter the giveaway, just tell me…who/what is your favorite monster? The winner will be randomly selected from all comments received, and that winner will be announced after 1 PM on 1/23/14.

Good luck!

Cindy, I just read the blurb, and it sounds awesome! Congratulations on your release!

I like surprises, too. And it’s a great idea about having one every 100 pages. As for my favorite monster, I like Mark Ruffolo’s Hulk a lot.

Congratulations on the upcoming release. I’ve been counting down watching for its release ever since I read its excerpt last year!!
As for the surprise every hundred pages is just one of the reasons I love your books so.
This for Christmas I handed out a few books to my friends who like to read like me and for others I just gave recommendations for excellent authors. Yes absolutely several of your books were in there along with some Jeaniene Frost, Lisa Kleypas and Nalini Singh.

Hi Cynthia – I agree with you on I, Frankenstein. When I saw a pre-view months ago I knew I wanted to see it. But like most movies I’ll be going alone – hey, more popcorn for me ;). Hellboy took a little piece of my heart so I guess he’s my favorite monster at the moment. Thank you :).

  4. Cynthia, this sounds awesome! I love your books and I know I’ll this 🙂 Huge congrats!

  6. Charlene says:

Congratulations, I hope I’m not too late, I was in the hospital yesterday! My favorite monster is dracula.

  7. Barbara Elness says:

My favorite monster is King Kong – he’s just so misunderstood. 😀

Hi Cynthia – I am not surprised by this post at all. In fact last night I was watching TV and a commercial for American Horror Story came on. I shook my head and said to myself, “I bet Cynthia watches that.” The commercials freak me out so I mute them and look away! I will say that I do enjoy getting spooked when I read your books though. Yes, the characters make me tense but I know I can stop reading at anytime…but I usually have to rush through the scary parts. Congrats and good luck on another book coming out!
