Even though this will be my 8th book, I am just as excited as I was with my first book. Maybe even more so.
It never gets old, and it never gets stale. That mix of fear (writers feel very exposed when their work leaves the safety of their hands and goes out into the world), excitement (my book is ready for release!) and a feeling of accomplishment as literally months and months (sometimes years) of work come to fruition in a very tangible way.
What always amazes and humbles me is the time and trouble friends, fellow writers, reviewers and strangers take to pass the word on, drop a friendly line of encouragement or a compliment on the book or cover. Book lovers are some of the nicest people on the planet.
But I’m going to switch this around, now. I also have a sense of excitement when a new release from a favorite author is about to come out. I felt this way when I heard about River Road by Jayne Ann Krentz. I feel that way when I see a new Alpha & Omega novel is due out by Patricia Briggs, and I used to feel it when Iain M. Banks was alive. I always look forward to the next Terry Pratchett, and when I stumbled on a Nora Roberts book I somehow had missed, Whiskey Beach, I was absolutely thrilled.
If you’re a writer, do you still feel that sense of excitement and wonder when you have a new book coming out, and as a reader, are there any writers who you feel that zing of anticipation for when you hear they have a new book on the way?
