Book Summary:

Sometimes wrong is oh-so-right…

After a wrenching loss, Ben McDaniels tried to escape his grief by working in dangerous, war-torn places like Africa and the Middle East. Now he’s back in his hometown and face-to-face with Aubrey Wellington, the hot-as-hell woman who is trouble with a capital T. Family and friends insist she’s not the one to ease his pain, but Aubrey sparks an intense desire that gives Ben hope for the future.

Determined to right the wrongs of her past, Aubrey is working hard to make amends. But by far, the toughest challenge to her plan is sexy, brooding Ben …even though he has absolutely no idea what she’s done…

Can this unlikely couple defy the odds and win over the little town of Lucky Harbor?

My Thoughts:

Lucky Harbor book #9. You would think after eight books in a contemporary series all set in the same town that things would get a little repetitive, right? Not so. Once In A Lifetime by Jill Shalvis does have the same great writing as previous books in the series, but the hero and heroine are different. Their struggles are different. The way they respond to one another are different. Even their passion is different. But it is all just as good as you would expect from the Lucky Harbor residents. And something that was the same as with all the other books in the series? I could not put it down.

The heroine, Aubrey is a mean girl all grown up and now wants to make amends with people she has wronged. The town still sees her as a troublemaker. The hero, Ben, is quiet and reserved. Everyone assumes he is still grieving the loss of his wife five years prior. The town loves him. Fate has put Ben and Aubrey together almost daily. These are two people least likely to get together, but, well, you can’t help who you fall in love with now, can you?

I really enjoyed Aubrey and Ben. They rival my favorite couple of the series so far (Sawyer & Chloe from Head Over Heels). Aubrey stole my heart with wanting so badly to be good. She hasn’t felt as though she has been good enough for anyone her whole life and that makes my heart ache for her. And then there is Ben. He is a lost soul. He doesn’t know what to do with himself (not that he would ever admit that). Being back in Lucky Harbor has shown him this is where he needs to be, though. Aubrey shows Ben what he needs, too. Her.Their love story was so emotional. They both have some tough things to work out personally and with one another. I love how they fought for each other though.

The side plots that each of the characters are tackling in addition to their own love story were awesome and really developed them as characters and makes you cheer for them. The appearances and meddling of previous characters Jack, Luke, Leah, Ali, and of course Lucille is always fun. Sometimes we all need friends to meddle in our business when we are missing out on great things because of our pride. Lucky Harbor is such a crazy, fun town and I really want to move there! Jill is always able to pull laughter out of me, make me fan myself from the warmth I feel when reading those sexy passionate scenes and also cause me to reach for tissues when my eyes threaten to overflow with tears. If you like hot contemporary romance full of love, laughter, friends and family, I highly recommend you read Once In A Lifetime.
