Pets in our world

My life with 3 cats bossing me around, (not to mention 4 kids), it’s no wonder that pets have made it into many of my stories. And given the very domineering nature of many pets, it’s no wonder that so many have TAKEN over my stories.

When it first happened, I wasn’t really sure what to do about it, so I gave in. That story is It’s a Dog’s Life, with Mosey a Basset Hound with more attitude than I was really prepared for. But I’m an easy going person and as I had no real direction for that book, I was happy to let him tell his story. I’d never have written one quite so well or without that surprise twist if I hadn’t let him take control.

When it came to stories after that, I had pets, but in smaller roles, and I didn’t let them take control. That worked until I came to the Broken Protocols series. Once again a pet appeared to want to be dominant. Now I have 2 Persian cats so when I wrote the cat into this story, of course it was a Persian.

I’m also experienced in attempting to boss a Persian around – hint – it doesn’t work! So I knew from the beginning that it would a lost cause in this story. but that didn’t mean that Charmin Marvin would be as big or as life-like a character as Mosey!

Yeah, right. 🙂

Charmin Marvin completely dominates. As I wrestled my way through books 2 & 3, I struggled to balance the cat’s role with the main characters (I’ve tried telling Charmin Marvin that he’s not one of them, but that cat won’t listen) and the suspense with the romance – and sometimes, the comedy completely dominates.

Like I always said, I never learned to write on the lines in school and that hasn’t changed now!

Broken Protocols #1 is out! Broken Protocols #2 is out next week! 🙂

Broken Protocols #2

Broken Protocols 2.3The future is a dangerous place…

To save her skin and the skin of her new lover, Dani Summerland marries Levi Blackburn. That’s the good part. The bad part is that she and Levi realize they’re pawns in a game with no rule book.

Levi Blackburn can’t believe he’s married – but he’s a lucky man and he knows it. Now he needs to find out who is after Dani and why so they can start their honeymoon.

As they struggle to find out who’s targeting them and what they want, the danger escalates and people around them start dying.

It’s a good thing Charmin Marvin, her talking cat, is helping them.

More protocols are broken and if they can’t win this game, their lives will be broken, too.

Broken Protocols #1

Dani’s been through a year of hell…Broken Protocols 1.6

Just as it’s getting better, she’s tossed forward through time with her orange Persian cat, Charmin Marvin, clutched in her arms. They’re dropped a few centuries into the future. There’s nothing she can do to stop it, and it’s impossible to go back.

And then it gets worse…

A year of government regulation is easing, and Levi Blackburn is feeling back in control. If he can keep his reckless brother in check, everything will be perfect. But while he’s been protecting Milo from the government, Milo’s been busy working on a present for him…

The present is Dani, only she comes with a snarky cat who suddenly starts talking…and doesn’t know when to shut up.

In a time where breaking protocols have severe consequences, things go from bad to worse, putting them all in danger…

Available at Amazon, Kobo, B&N, iTunes and Google Play!

Have you ever read/written a book where you could see a secondary character try to wrestle control away from the main characters?? Or is it just me with that problem? lol.

About Dale Mayer

Dale Mayer writes romantic suspense, with or without paranormal elements like TUESDAY'S CHILD (2011) and now young adult books in various genres like DANGEROUS DESIGNS (2011). Writing stabilizes her in a life gone wild! The other stabilizers? Cheesecake and her four cats! Of course, she's dreaming to think she'll get a piece cheesecake once her four kids find out she's been baking!

I’ve read both these novellas, and I love them, and I love Charmin’ Marvin. He’s such a great character! I even love the 2nd novella better than the first. You have a natural ear for humor.

And my small cat, who probably doesn’t weigh 5 pounds, is 10 times bossier than my 50-pound dog. She’s very vocal, and when she wants something, she fells me until I’m smart enough to figure it out – which sometimes takes longer than either of us. Apparently I’m not as smart as she is.

My books are so fluid as I write them, and I’m open to talking animals. So if one takes a bigger role, I’m all for it!

      Hi Edie,

Isn’t Charmin Marvin a character! He’s completely ruling his world – yeah, I know, I let him. 🙂 One of my cats sings at night time. Drives me crazy! He keeps it up for hours. lol.

I’m going to have to put that in a book one day. lol.

    Hi Dale,

Congratulations on your upcoming new release, Broken Protocol 2! I love it when a character is so striking, they take over the page. Heroes are great, but give me a Gandalf or Spock or the Genie in Aladdin 🙂 Love Charmin Marvin.

Congrats not he books, Dale! And yes, I have read a book in which a secondary character tries to take over. For us readers, that usually means that book will turn into a series. And I have seen sometimes when an author doesn’t intend for a character to take the limelight but the feedback from the readers says otherwise. It’s great fun! Well, for us readers at least. 🙂
