Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Coreene Callahan. She’s the author of the Dragonfury Novels and the Circle of Seven series, is a rabid hockey fan with a love of the great outdoors. More comfortable on a ski slope than in a shopping mall, she spends her days dreaming up and writing high-octane, action-packed paranormal romances.
(MMG) Welcome to Magical Musings. Where did you get the inspiration for your series/book?
(CC) As often happens with me, inspiration for the Dragonfury Series came from a book in another series I was writing. At the time, I was writing Knight Awakened, the first book in my Circle of Seven series. In the middle of it, three dragon-shifters showed up. I hadn’t prepared for them. I had no idea they were coming. They simply showed up out of the blue, which naturally got me thinking. I started asking all kinds of questions about them. Within hours a group of dragon-warriors walked into my head and was all she wrote—the Dragonfury Series was born.
(MMG) If the apocalypse happened, which of your heroes &/or heroines would you want to have on hand to help you survive and why?
(CC) Oh boy, that’s a hard question to answer, because all off the warriors in the both Dragonfury novels and the Circle of Seven series are all hardcore, never-say-quit guys. I think, though, I’d head straight for Bastian (commander of the Nightfury dragon-warriors). He’s a serious bad-ass with the intellect and skill set to back it up. He’s never without a plan. He sees all the angles and is a brilliant strategist, so he’d definitely be the one you want on your side in a crazy post apocalyptic world.
(MMG) Who is the celebrity who inspired the characters in your latest book?
(CC) Celebrities don’t really come into play when I write a book. I have a definite idea of what each characters looks like before I put a single word on paper. Having said that, however, I think Charlie Hunnan would the guy who inspired me while writing about Venom (the hero of Fury of Obsession, the fifth installment of the Dragonfury Series). I love Jax Teller, the character he play in Sons of Anarchy! He can be violent and brutal when he needs to be, yet oh, so gentle when the situation calls for it. Venom’s very much like.
(CC) Here’s the picture I had of Venom up on my vision board when I was writing Fury of Obsession…
(MMG) What genre(s) do you write in & why?
(CC) I write in a few different genres: paranormal romance (Dragonfury Series), historical fantasy romance (Circle of Seven Series) and straight historical romance (Warrior’s Revenge).
I love hard hitting, action-packed stories that allow me to write a lot of battle scenes—high-octane action with lots of grit and a sexy romance woven in—so I naturally gravitated toward genres that allow me to play with weapons and magical ability. But I always tell people, that my genres picked me, not the other way around. I can’t seem to write anything that isn’t fast-paced and full of magic.
(MMG) Are there any particular locations you have traveled to that have made it into your novels?
(CC) The Dragonfury Series is set in Washington State. I had very good fortune to spend some time in Seattle and absolutely loved it. Visiting the locations in my books is incredibly helpful. It helps me visualize, set the scene, and understand the vibe a city evokes. I spend a year living in Europe and traveled all over, so when it came time to write Europe into both the Dragonfury and Circle of Seven series, I absolutely set them in cities and countries I’d visited while there.
(MMG) If you were not writing, what would your profession be?
(CC) Honestly, I can’t imagine not writing. But before I started writing full time, I was interior designer. Such a fun job. I had a blast working with the very talented people in that office. I would go back to it in an instant if I wasn’t meant to be a writer.
(MMG) What is your go-to snack or meal when you are on deadline?
(CC) Coffee and Hershey’s Kisses…hands down! I also love Reese’s peanut butter cups. I simply can not get enough of all the peanut butter/chocolaty goodness!
(MMG) How many more books do you have planned your the series?
(CC) The Dragonfury Series is opened ended. The world is so big and there are so many character across many different continents to play with that I’ll write the books for as long as readers want to read them.
(MMG) What would the theme song for this novel be & why?
(CC) I don’t know that I have theme song, but I actually put a playlist together for Fury of Obsession. Quite unusual for me, because I tend to sink into the zone and never hear anything while writing. This book, however, was a bit different. I listened to that playlist religiously while writing Fury of Obsession. Over and over. Again and again. So if I had to pick one song off that playlist, it would be…
(MMG) Do you have any other upcoming releases that readers should know about?
(CC) Fury of Obsession (Dragonfury Series, book 5) just released last week! I’m so excited to share Venom and Evelyn’s story with everyone. Fury of Surrender, the sixth book in the series, will be released at the beginning of 2016. In the meantime, I’ve got a trilogy of Dragonfury novellas on the horizon, the first of which will come out in Fall 2015. So stay tuned for that!
Dragon-warrior Venom lives in self-imposed isolation. Cursed by his toxic touch, he is deadly to anyone who has contact with him for too long. Set apart from others and hounded by intense loneliness, he craves the lasting connection he believes he cannot possess. Until a chance encounter with a sultry mortal offers a ray of hope…
Evelyn Foxe is the woman of Venom’s every desire, but she’s too busy running from the Russian mob to think about love. As she accepts Venom’s offer to help her escape her precarious situation, she’s skeptical, afraid that he’s in league with those sent to harm her. But when a biological weapon is unleashed in her hometown, Evelyn is forced to trust Venom—or risk the dangers of going it alone.
Will they survive the firestorm that rages around them? And can they pull from the ashes a love that will defy all the odds and last through the ages?
