When life hands you…. a puppy!

Did I ask for a puppy? No. Did I want a puppy? Hell no! But could I say no to my son who lives in his own bachelor suite on my place when he asked about getting one – No. So he got his puppy. And he works full time. Which means puppy needs a babysitter. snort.

And guess who works from home? You got it – me!

Now don’t get me wrong – I love animals. Have had cats for most of the last 30 years and have spent decades with dogs, but a puppy is a whole new level of commitment – that I hadn’t been prepared for. I mean I’ve had puppies in the past… but somehow the memory fades over time. 🙂

Still, maybe this is a good thing. His name is Copper. His mother is a German shepherd/Malamute cross – and then there is his purebred St. Bernard daddy… See a trend here? Yeah, we’ve had him 3 weeks and he’s doubled his weight, almost doubled his length and has managed to christen almost every tile in the house.

In the beginning…

It was tiny and adorable and was capable of endless body functions…

Now it’s not so tiny, still adorable and has mastered the art of endless body functions…

Yet… he’s worked his way into my heart and soul and forces me out on walks (where I end up picking him up because he’s scared of the big bad world) insists I go out and hone up my ball throwing skills from decades ago (nope not gonna say how many) and gives me the most lovely puppy eyes when he’s being ignored. Oh happy sigh. Who could ignore the little guy??? Well my Persian Phoenix would LOVE to, particularly when he stole her box – but so not happening. 🙂

But a happy son is a joy to see. Here’s Jason and Copper – making the journey worthwhile. Copper is 8 weeks in this image. lol

    Hi, Dale,

Congratulations on the new member of your family! Copper is adorable <3 and your son does look happy. My husband has a dog to thank for his now-daily walks his doctor has been asking for for years. Training must be hard and time consuming, but the way you describe the puppy eyes, sounds entirely worth it!

Congratulations on your new puppy! So cute. I miss not having a dog. And a dog definitely makes you feel better. He’s a cutie, too.

Mary, I didn’t know your husband had a dog. You’ll have to show pictures. I did walk more when I had a dog. I’m eager to get another dog, but it probably won’t be for another year.

      Hi Edie,

I haven’t had a dog for 19 years. What a shock this one was. I can see bringing in senior dogs on a foster basis and give them a nice home up to the end. Not sure I’d go for a puppy again, though!
