Guest blog: Julie Ann Walker on writing romantic suspense

Julie Ann Walker Author PhotoToday, I’m pleased to welcome New York Times bestselling author Julie Ann Walker to Magical Musings. Julie is the author of the Black Knights Inc. and Deep Six romantic suspense series. Take it away, Julie:

Jennifer: Welcome, Julie! Please tell readers about your new book, Devil and the Deep.

Julie: Hi Jennifer!  Thanks so much for having me on Magical Musing.  What a treat!  Devil and the Deep is packed full of all the good things: action, adventure, madness, mayhem, and steamy hot lovin’ — natch.  Set on the remote Dry Tortugas National Park islands, and inside the crumbling ruins of Fort Jefferson, readers are taken on a rollercoaster ride that encompasses traitorous relatives, the nefarious machinations of OPEC, a botched kidnapping, and so, so much more!

Jennifer: This is the second book in your Deep Six romantic suspense series. Can you tell us a little about the series?

DEVIL AND THE DEEP - coverJulie: Six men.  One sunken Spanish galleon.  Millions of gold and silver coins lying in wait on the ocean floor.  And a past that refuses to let the guys of Deep Six Salvage forget the Navy SEAL motto that the only easy day was yesterday…  The series arc follows the hunt for, and excavation of, the legendary ghost ship, but each novel has its own suspense arc.  So no cliffhangers.

Jennifer: What appeals to you about the romantic suspense genre?

Julie: To me, romantic suspense is the meshing of many genres.  It has all the sexual tension of a good romance, the who-done-it of a good mystery, and the action and adventure of a good thriller.  So, like I said above, it’s all the good things rolled into one, which makes it a blast to write.

Jennifer: What inspired you to write the Deep Six series?

Julie: I read a book about Mel Fisher and the raising of the treasure of the Atocha, a bounty worth over 400 million dollars.  I fell in love with the allure of sunken treasure and the romance of treasure hunting.  The real-life story got my muse humming.  I thought, “What if the holy grail of sunken Spanish shipwrecks had yet to be found?”  “What if a group of Navy SEALs, arguably the world’s best divers, went in search of it?”  Voila!  Deep Six was born!

Jennifer: You also write the Black Knights Inc. series. Can you tell us a little about that series?

Julie: I like to say, “Motorcycle mechanics by day, Uncle Sam’s last resort by night.”  The Black Knights are a clandestine government defense firm operating under the guise of custom motorcycle builders.  Think: big, burly, tattooed spies on bikes.  A ton of fun!

Hell Or High Water Cover FinalJennifer: What are some of your favorite romantic suspense books/authors and why?

Julie: I love Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series.  It’s packed with outrageously awesome characters.  And she tells her stories from multiple points of view, which keeps the pages flying by.

The One-Eyed Jacks series by Cindy Gerard is romantic suspense done right.  Filled with alpha males, kickass women, and twisty-turny plots, I read Cindy’s books in one sitting.

Pamela Clare’s I-Team series is, quite simply, da bomb.  She writes tough, brooding men like no other.  And her plots are extraordinarily complex.  I just love her work.

Jennifer: Have you always wanted to be a writer? What got you started on your writing journey?

Julie: Ha!  No.  The truth is my degree is in advanced mathematics, and I taught in that field for seven years.  But I’ve always been a voracious reader, and one day a story popped into my mind fully formed.  I decided to sit down and write it, simply for my own pleasure.  Once I was finished, I felt such a sense of accomplishment that I didn’t want to just save it to my hard drive, I wanted to share it.  So I entered a couple of writing contests, found my agent through those contests, and sold that first manuscript, Hell on Wheels, to my current publisher.  I’ve been writing romantic suspense ever since.  Talk about a career change!

Jennifer: What’s next for you? What are you working on?

Julie: I’m busily writing the next three books in my Black Knights Inc. series.  All of which are debuting next year, so I’m living in chaos right now.  But I wouldn’t have it any other way.  There’s that old say, “Find a job that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”  Well, I love my job!
