Book Review: The Healer by Sharon Sala
January 24th, 2009 by LaDonna
I’ve been reading Sharon Sala’s fantastic books for years, and this one didn’t disappoint. Jonah Gray Wolf has the ability to heal, and his mystical connection to animals is unexplainable. A man on the run, he’s driven to find peace and a sense of place somewhere. A man hunts him, a man Jonah once saved. Driven by greed, power, and the desire to possibly live forever, Major Bourdain has a million dollar bounty on the Native American. Everyone has a price, and Bourdain knows once captured he’ll be able to persuade Jonas to live a life of luxuary as his personal miracle.
Life on the road is tough and lonely, and Jonas wanders into Little Top, West Virginia after evading yet another kidnapping attempt. While in town, he runs across a kindred soul, Luce Andahar, and quickly comes to her aid by healing her dog. Alone for most of her life, she’s cautious yet offers the stranger a place to rest this wintry night. Having witnessed the healing, Luce knows only good can come from such a man.
After settling in, Jonas starts working for the elderly lady who shares the mountain with Luce. He soon discovers that Luce has a dangerous admirer, and protecting her becomes his priority. Uncertain if his hunters will catch up to him, Jonas knows he won’t abandon the only woman who could possibly share his life. Together, they face danger and together they stand. No more running, but a standoff that will determine their future.
Sharon has a way of capturing her characters, and the healing scenes in this story are beautifully written. A few times, my breath caught and I felt the sacredness of having such a gift. Just a beautiful story!
